I have FINALLY found the piano sound I have been searching for !!!!! It’s on this Yamaha PLG-150 AP expansion....it’s the second patch (CFBrite).....I saved that patch to USER 1 as the user voice bank in the PLG is always the first thing you see and you have to manually switch to the preset banks....... I have spent hundreds of dollars (literally) buying expansion boards and sample voice libraries and at last the search is over !!!!!! I installed it in my Motif rack (the original, not ES) and my quest is over !!!!!! It is perfection to my ears !!!!!! (the samples are made from a $300,000 Yamaha CFIIIS 10 foot concert grand)… I installed it in my Motif rack instead of my Motif ES6 as I never want to take my ES6 out of the house again (it’s my recording studio)..... This piano sound had no reverb default so I changed the reverb setting from a 0 to a 3 so there’s just a tiny bit of reverb .....perfect !!!!
NOTE: Save your PLG board to the Motif after you install it and you have more settings (like voice name) available among other things ....there is a save PLG and load PLG area in settings....once yThis demo was recorded playing on 76 unweighted keys (I start out with playing all 76 keys).....bear with the playing

UPDATE: I found out that the distortion I was hearing on the following MP3 was from the laptop I was playing it on because when I played it on my other laptop there was no distortion .....if you are hearing distortion and want to hear what it really sounds like, either play it on another computer or burn it to a CD and play it on a separate CD player.... https://www.dropbox.com/s/b0o0mzpm5i2i4fi/YamahaPLG150AP-GregFredericks’Demo-A-April10,2014.mp3 PLG’s are so nice...no loading....you boot up and they are ready !!!!! |

I’m glad you found the right piano sound for you. Piano sounds are so personal of course. It may be heresy on a Motif site, but I prefer the pianos in my older EX5 as they cut through better, especially the “Stereo Piano” patch, which is so versatile. But my piano heaven right now is PianoTeq and its CP80 model. With a touch of chorus, it’s instant Tony Banks! :) I have a PLG150-VL and a PLG150-AN in my Motif Rack ES, so no room for any more! |

That piano sounds really good (I went to the web site)....my computers are old and I have trouble with latency with software
I used to have an EX5R but it met a sad end and I bought Motifs and never replaced it, although I might....it was cool as it had different types of tone generation in it.....it was a big rack unit (3 rack spaces).....same size as the Yamaha TG77 which I also have....I bought it to replace my SY77...... |

Shame you never replaced the EX5R. It’s still amazing today! I too have a TG77, and an SY99, and an AN1x and an FS1r! I guess I like Yamaha! :-) Certainly the older ones. What happened to the EX5R? |

I bought my EX5R new but with no warranty and shortly after I bought it the two buttons that select the internal banks quit working and quotes I got to repair it were sky high and I sold it....
I might buy another, but I really have all the gear I need....I can
I have: YAMAHA:
Motif 8
Korg Karma ROLAND:
XV-3080
I can do most anything with what I have....my wife’s getting bummed out when I want more stuff as it’s all so expensive, even used and I can’t blame her.....when she buys stuff for herself, it’s not expensive like my stuff......plus, I’ve actually reached

This IS a nice sound. I still prefer the original Motif rather than that stuff they make now. Yamaha really put a lot of thought into the first Motif.. and that PowerGrand.. oh my, thats the BEST piano patch they have ever made. This recording you have of the brite sounds REALLY nice, especially for salsa/Latin. Im going to do some digging around to find one of these cards. Thanks for actually taking the time to record this and post it on DB. Take care! |
