So to start let me say I read some posts here about the internal effects unit, and I also downloaded and read the PDF article from Phil Clendeninn on implementing effects on the ES. That solved most of the problem I had but not all.  I have the ES Rack.

The problem I have is no voice mode effects in Multi Mode.

The article helped, and although I was able to copy the Ins effect from Voice to Multi mode on an instrument by checking the box in the effect edit screen, it did nothing on a drum voice I was using on another channel. I flip-flopped the midi channels and the same thing… keyboards effected, but not drums.

The voice Im using is the Ambient Drum patch. Cannot seem to duplicate the great rev/delay used in the voice mode over in Multi.

Any suggestions?

The routing of the effects inside the Motif-series is very complex. And this is not really a problem because with that complexity comes very detailed sounds… And it is those that separate the Motif from the competition.

A Motif-series Drum Kit is made up of 73 independent instruments, one per Key C0~C6.. Each with its own Oscillator, each with its own filter, and amplitude envelope generator and pitch paramters, each with its own volume and panning, and each capable of being routed to the one or the other, both or neither of the two available Insertion Effects, and each has a send amount to the two System Effects (REV, CHO)

So you can, on a drum by drum basis totally decide what a drum is going to sound like. You can put tons of reverb and delay on the snare and keep the kick bone dry, you can, as in the Ambient Kit, where you have some of the drums going to the TEMPO DELAY while other drums in the kit do not.

While all of this routing is easier to see in the keyboard version than it is in the Rack version (due to screen size, etc) you still have all the routing capability. Page 73 in the Owner’s Manual: “Voice Edit (for Drum Voice)” - I no longer have a Rack ES so I cannot post the relevant screen shots, I will include the EDITOR screens.

_ First, study the Voice in Voice mode
_ Once we learn the Effects being used we can ensure that they all get transferred to the MULTI. This will happen in two steps. One for the INSERT 1 and 2 assigned to the Ambient Kit, and one to copy the System Effect that is responsible for the Tempo driven delays.

The INSERT EFFECTS on the Ambient Kit are a Hall 2 Reverb, and a Compressor. On a drum by drum basis you can route a drum to either the Hall 2 Reverb, or the Compressor. Each of the 73 Keys has an individual routing. The screen shot shows the ambient drum kit, I click on C0~C6 which open the KEY EDIT window

I’m showing C1 (Kick) and E1 (Snare)… Because the KICK does not go to the Insert Effects at all, and the Snare Drum does - it is routed to the HALL2 Insert. As you recall a Key you will see how it is routed

INSERTION EFFECT
Insert Eff 1 = HALL 2
Insert Eff 2 = COMPRESSOR

The Insert Effect routing will automatically be maintained when you place this Drum Kit in a Multi, all you need to do to recall it, is to make sure the PART has the INSERT EFFECT SWITCH set to ON for the Drums.

SYSTEM EFFECTS
Reverb = R3 Plate
Chorus = TempoDelay2

You will notice that the “R3 Plate” is not used at all in this KIt. The main SEND is set to 0, so no drum can reach the Reverb “R3 Plate"… The ambient sound is coming from the INSERT EFF 1 (Hall 2). When you recall a KEY’s routing by touching the small keyboard, you will see that the Key is routed to EFF1, EFF2, or THRU.

When a drum Key is routed to an INSERT EFF, the REVERB and CHORUS knobs become unavailable.
When a drum Key is routed to THRU (neither of the INS EFF) the REV and CHO knobs are available.

The individual SEND AMOUNT for each Key is also automatically recalled when you place the Kit in a MULTI, but what is NOT recalled is the OVERALL send level of each PART to the System Effects, this you will need to set manually…

On this kit the REVERB SEND = 0
The CHORUS SEND = 50

You will need to set these manually.

Here’s how to put this to use
Go to MULTI mode
Place the Ambient Kit in the PART you want to use it
To recall the Hall2 and the Compressor make sure the INS EFF SW is set ON for the PART.

In the Rack ES any eight PARTS can have the INSERT EFFECT SWITCH active - only 8 check marks can be activated at any one time.
Press MULTI
Use the PAGE [<][>] buttons to move to the EFFECT screen find the InsEffSw and make sure your Drum Kits Part is marked.

Now you must COPY the CHORUS EFFECT and assign it to the MULTI.
Press [UTILITY]
Use the PAGE [>] button until you reach the JOB SELECT screen
Find COPY MULTI
You want to set the top “TYPE” (the source) to the PART number containing the Ambient Kit
You want to set the bottom TYPE (the destination) to EFFECT, then mark the CHORUS box
Press ENTER to execute.

This now makes the Tempo Delay available as the SYSTEM’s Chorus Effect.
Navigate to your Multi’s PART parameters and set the Chorus Send or the Drum Part = 50, and set the Reverb Send = 0

The sound will be exactly as the Ambient Kit in Voice mode.

Hope that helps.
