I just bought a used Rack ES. I have a power cord, however, I don’t know where to start.

I have Sonar X1 and a Layla, with an old Korg Midi keyboard I’m just using for a controller because I have a Roland JV 1010 module. It’s also been a long time since I’ve done anything setup wise.

I figured I would need the .ins file for Sonar, so I downloaded that.

Questions:
1. Do I really need the USB cable, or could I just daisy chain the rack with MIDI?
2. What does the USB cable give me and where can I get one (inexpensively)?
3. Anything else that anyone can recommend that I do to make my setup seemless?

And thanks for any help you can throw my way.

Welcome to the forums!

1. Do I really need the USB cable, or could I just daisy chain the rack with MIDI?

the Motif-Rack ES is 16 Part Multi-timbral, if you plan to use as such, you would benefit timing-wise by connecting the unit directly to the computer via USB. If you plan on just using it to play a single sound at a time (Voice), then daisy chaining a MIDI cable is (old school) but fine.

2. What does the USB cable give me and where can I get one (inexpensively)?

A USB connections gives you multiple port communication between the Rack-ES and your computer. This allows to run the Motif-Rack ES Editors (Multi Part, and Voice). These Editors require a multiple Port connection (USB).
Where do get one? Planet Earth… Google for your nearest location… A store that sells synthsizers, a computer store, etc.

3. Anything else that anyone can recommend that I do to make my setup seemless?

we are sure you mean “seamless” ... Because your setup is a big deal it may seem less important than other things, but too seamlessly make the transition to the world of the Yamaha module, spend time with the Quick Guide area of the manual ... Until you understand the navigation, you will not find it easy to find things. There is a lot of synthesizer behind those buttons!!!
:-)
This is why you may want to get a USB cable and check out the EDITORS… They can help simply from a visual standpoint.

Hope that helps.
