Hi there, Not sure whether to post this here or in the PLG Forum! :) I am close to purchasing a Motif ES Rack as I would like to add some Yamaha sounds to my mainly Korg & Roland setup. I have for years used Yamaha sound cards starting with the DB50XG (remember those?) piggy-backed to various Soundbaster type cards followed by the incredible SW1000XG & DS2416 combo. I also treated myself to a PLG100-DX for one of the SW1000XG cards some years ago. Which brings me to my question; I see references to using PLG150-DX and other PLG150 series cards in the Motif ES Rack for example but would the PLG100 series cards work in the Motif also? I believe the only difference between the 100/150 series might be user RAM available to store sounds in. Is this assumption correct? I am hoping the Motif can act as a host for my existing DX card as they seem rare (and expensive) these days so might have to pass if it is not compatible with the PLG100-DX! Also...sacrilege I know but does the Motif ES Rack have a GM or XG mode built-in or would I have to add the PLG100-XG to get this?
Thanks & kind regards,

Well I think I may have answered my own question by going back in time to 2009 in the PLG Forum! Looks like I was right on the lack of any user memory but worse still is the fact that it won’t play all the voices?
And it gets even worse than that...eBay are listing the same lowly PLG100-DX that is crippled in the Motif for an eye-watering $500 -=Glyn=- |

The PLG cards are going for silly prices these days on eBay, like a lot for things. E.g. I was after a TG77 and watched the same one being listed about eight times with a start price of > £400 and no bids on any of the times it was listed. I eventually got a different one for £80! Likewise, I have been watching SY99s going for £400+, but just snagged one for £250, so a bit of patience is needed. It seems to be sellers setting daft start or “buy it now” prices that don’t stimulate an auction. I have a PLG150-AN in my Motif ES Rack myself, and am watching for a PLG150-VL at the right price to fill the remaining slot. I’m still waiting (but have the VL in my EX5 as well!). I’m sure one will come up at the right price, but have ignored the five I’ve seen on ebay this year due to the silly start prices. I don’t need a DX card myself, not with having an FS1R, TG77 and SY99 (and FM inside a Nord G2 Engine)! |
