I copy many midi files to a USB thumb drive, then plug it into the USB slot (device), try to load a MIDI file from the thumb drive but it does not see them.
Can this be done and if yes, then how ?

Yes you can.

You have to load “songs” from your usb to find your midi files. 
Press the file button and LOAD it.
