When I have the XF in Song mode, I am able to access any of the (16) voices from the external keyboard. This allows me to play one voice on the XF’s keyboard and one on the midi keyboard. Is there a way to do the same thing when in Master Mode? So far it seems that both keyboards are locked onto the same voice. |

Hi,
Yes, there is, but in reality it is the same as Song mode.
That’s because the current Master program loads a voice or performance, which means that when you select it, the XF’s tone generator actually goes into Voice or Performance mode. Think of the Master mode as an overarching memory mechanism, where each of the 128 programs not only points to a sound, but also recalls the respective playing mode (Voice, Performance or Song/Pattern mode) and other useful stuff (Zones, etc.). When editing a Master program, you can select what mode to activate, and what voice, performance or song/pattern mix to load. - H - |

I can probably use the XF and an external midi keyboard using different voices by setting up a song within Master mode. I was hoping to go a step beyond that and be able to access a different Master Mode program on the external keyboard than the one I am using on the XF’s keyboard. Accessing a voice directly has some increased capabilities compared to accessing it as a voice within a song. Using an organ voice directly (or as a Master Mode program) for example, often provides drawbar capability with the sliders. This is not available when using it as a voice within a song. Accessing a Performance provides the keyboard split and layering. It seems that I am limited to one Master Mode program at a time. The external keyboard plays the same Master Mode program as the XF’s keyboard. Maybe it is beyond the XF’s design capability to what I’d like to do. |

Yes, you can only select one Master program at a time, and the basic playing mode restrictions still apply when accessed from Master mode. Certain instruments (Roland, Korg, Kurzweil, etc.) do allow each part of a Performance to operate on individual MIDI channels. Called “Combi” or “Multi” mode by some, they’re in reality the same as Song Mixing mode on the Motif. Whether they provide drawbar emulation at that time or not, I don’t know. Drawbars on the Motif XF is really just the level of each Element (up to 8) that make up a voice. When in Voice mode, these Element levels can also be edited via MIDI, although I don’t think the necessary messages will be recognized while in other modes. Note that layers and splits can be done in Song mode on the Motif. It’s simply a matter of assigning multiple parts to the same MIDI channel (layer) and limiting each part’s note range (split). - H - |
