Hello all:

I have movies on my computer, divix, adn veoh and flv
I would like to burn these movies to dvd, so that they would play on any STANDARD DVD PLAYER.

I can stream some of these movies to my tv set, via the xbox 360, but I want to play these movies on a regular dvd player.
I someon hook me up with the type of software-FREEWARE
that will allow me to play these movies on a regular dvd player.

Do I need to re-format the movies?
If I need to do that, then what type of converting free software will I need.

I’ve searched and downloaded stuff via a google search, but nothing would work, these movies would only play on the xbox 360 not my dvd player.

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR TROUBLE, I MEAN IT, THANKS FOR HELPING US.

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

Jerry, I’ve been where you are and gave up. I ended up buying a portable DVD player [Mustek MP100] that plays DivX discs (it also does mpeg 1 & 2 files and SVCD/VCD).  The DVD player in my car stereo also plays DivX files as well [Model VRVD640g from Roadmaster/VR3]. I’m sure there is software out there, but frankly, I have better things to do with my computer than recode files to burn to DVD.

Jerry, Don’t give up so fast.

Check out this website:

http://www.doom9.org

It has a LOT of conversion guides, and pointers to (mostly) freeware utilities.  Be prepared to do some reading, though, because these conversion procedures are often highly complex and technical.  But sometimes, you can just do EXACTLY what he does and get the same result.

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

Thanks for the “heads up”, Tony. I’m on the market as well for this type of software and don’t want to make the “expensive” mistakes I made getting into “home studio production”. I hope this thread doesn’t drop and others can offer other and even more solutions.

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

Jerry - post up when you discover anything of slightest usefulness /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt=

I confess to being surprised at how convoluted it is to do the opposite, ie rip a DVD to an Ipod or similar. You buy a CD plug up your Ipod and rip it in about 10 mins or less. To do the same with a DVD requires software to remove the protection and then further software to rip the movie to the required size. I was completely surprised that Itunes was no help at all. You buy the all singing all dancing ipod with video capabilities but can’t rip your own dvds to it without a lot of time and hassle.

Hmmm

Cheers

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

So far, all I’ve been able to come up with is software that will only let you copy movie files from your computer to disk, as data files, which will only play on another computer or Xbox 360.
However, a while back, as late as last year, I was able to burn movies from my computer with a product by SONIC.digital media.

It seems that these files were made into the format of DIVIX and VEOH,,, those movies play fine from the disks I’ve made.

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

Indeed… Convoluted is putting it mildly… And we have the DMCA to thank for that…

CDs never had a copy protection mechanism (at least, one that “stuck.") It’s the fact that DVD’s have the CSS encryption that no one is willing to touch after the authors of DeCSS were darn-near hanged.

I have done what you describe; put a movie on my iPod classic.  But it wasn’t worth the effort.  It took far longer to do the transfer than to watch the finished product…

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

My wife was delighted to watch some movies on her Nano, but it took longer than real time to de-encrypt then encode the dvd as a suitable file. It is frustrating. My guess is that Apple and others would rather sell you an additional download of the dvd.

Jerry - keep going buddy. You’ll find the answer - think laterally for a bit. It may not help but its something to try /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt=

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

Well this sort of makes me angry, but at least I won’t have to PAY TO VIEW new releases anymore.
In three days or less, I can see a movie from the internet for FREE.

Click the website below, and enjoy.
Some times the movies are showing very good, sometimes not, but at least their free, and new releases, even two to three days new in theaters near you,,,enjoy.

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

Someone already mentioned doom9 as a source for DVD software but you might also check out http://www.videohelp.com. You can also download demos of Nero burning software from the Nero web site. They’re time limited but at least you could burn what you have to DVD.

Xvid4PSP is a freeware program that works well for format conversions to iPods, cellphones, and PSP. The conversion does take a while--you’re re-encoding the video in most cases and that takes time--but if you set it up to work overnight it’s not as frustrating.

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

sorry i’m late on this one Jerry. since i am now doing video production, i use Ashampoo Burning 8, Nero software and DVD Architect. you probably have the stuff on your computer in .avi or .mov or .flv which is flash player. in order for you to play it on a standard dvd player it needs to be converted to mpeg.

Re: DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?

Mpeg is a generic term an MP3 is an audio Mpeg file, Mpeg4 is a video file. You can create Mpegs with various types of software - I think I used DVD43.
