First I would like to say what a great resource this site is.

I looked around here for about 3 hours now, but could not find my topic, so if it is one that is asked a lot, I am sorry in advance for posting it again.

OK, on page 46 of the MOTIF-Rack ES owners manual, it describes assigning what looks like EITHER external controls for individual parameters within individual voices, multi, performance, via AS1… Or assigning external controls for individual parameters that will be used for “Controlling the overall system with ASSIGN A & B”.

I am lost!

I have a Keystation Pro-88 (I know y’all hate ‘em around here:( ) with 59 buttons, rotaries, and faders, that I would like to assign as many “Across the board” MOTIF control functions/parameters to… But the directions are confusing me lil brain.

How do I go about doing this using/cross referencing the data list for accomplishing this seemingly simple task that I am too slow to figure out (I am assuming that everything I need to know how to do this is in this data list and the manual).

Thank you for any help you can provide, folks.

Frog…

Re: Total n00b control assigning questions.

Welcome to the forums…

The architecture of the Motif Rack ES allows you assign physical controllers to parameters within a VOICE. The VOICE is the basic playable entity in the Motif-Rack ES. Inside each Voice you have 6 Control Sets. These allow each Voice to be customized in how it responds to various controllers.

Typical assignments for things like Mod Wheel, Pitch Bend Wheel, Aftertouch, etc. can be assigned differently in each VOICE.

You will find that MW is usually assigned to Common LFO (C-LFO) or Element LFO (E-LFO) doing PMD (Pitch Modulation Depth) which is synth-talk for vibrato. A low frequency oscillator assigned to vary the pitch of the signal… so that when you increase the value sent from the controller (MW) the depth of the pitch change increases. But sometimes you will find that it is assigned to control effects… like on a typical B3 organ sound, it might be responsible for Rotary Speaker speed.

Whatever assigments are made within the VOICE (VOICE mode) will be respected when the VOICE is placed in a MULTI or in a PERFORMANCE

AS1 and AS2 are devices that you can use to control various functions with the Voice. The DATA LIST booklet will outline the various destination. By default AS1 is assigned to cc016 (Control Change message number 16) while AS2 is assigned to cc017. These you can use differently in each Voice.

Whatever destinations you select for AS A and AS B will apply globally to the entire Motif-Rack ES. AS A default to cc018 and AS B defaults to cc019. This means that no matter what Voice, Performance or MULTI you call up they will do the same thing.

So if you can send cc016 and cc017 from knobs on your controllers you will find that they are already programmed to do a wide variety of things within each different VOICE you call up.

The global cc018 and cc019 you may take some time about what you will assign these to… it will depend on how you use your Motif-Rack ES. See the Data List booklet for the chart on Control A/B for destinations you can select. The default is AEG Decay and AEG Sustain, but you can change these to more useful functions if you prefer. Tempo for example.

Hope that helps get you started.
