Is it possible to take a layered voice such as piano / strings, and use a foot pedal to control the volume of the string layer as in bringing in the strings on top of the piano?

Re: Controlling Layers

That’s quite feasible. Which instrument do you have?

These forums are shared by users of the Motif, Motif Rack, S90, Motif ES, S90 ES, Motif Rack ES. MO6, MO8, Motif XS and Motif Rack XS. While you can accomplish what you want on each of these instruments. the exact steps will vary according to which instrument you have.

Let us know.

Regards,

Brad Weber

Re: Controlling Layers

Is it possible to take a layered voice such as piano / strings, and use a foot pedal to control the volume of the string layer as in bringing in the strings on top of the piano?

It is possible in VOICE mode but perhaps is easier to accomplish in PERFORMANCE mode.

Getting to know the different modes in your XS8 will help you determine just which is best to accomplish your goal.
A VOICE is the fundamental playable entity in the XS architecture. It usually is a single instrument sound made from several sets of multi-samples. However, a VOICE can be a combination of two instruments.

A PERFORMANCE is a combination of up four complete VOICES mapped to the keyboard so you can play them either as splits or layers or combination split/layers.

We’ll describe PERFORMANCE mode first as it is easiest from a programming standpoint.
Press [[PERFORM]
Press [[JOB]
Press [F1] INIT
Press [ENTER]
This will initiallize a PERFORMANCE and place the Full Concert Grand in PART 1

Press [PERFORM] to return to the main screen “InitializedPerfrom”
Press [F2] VOICE
Here you can see that PART 1 is the FULL CONCERT GRAND
Move the cursor down to PART 2
Place a check mark in the box to activate PART 2
Use the Category Search function to select your String Voice.

You now have an acoustic piano and strings layered across the keyboard. Next you will want to have one of them (strings) controlled by the Foot Pedal. Plug a Yamaha FC7 pedal into the FC1 jack on the back panel of the XS8. By default a pedal in FC1 will be assigned to cc011 Expression - which allows you to control the Volume of sounds on the current transmit channel.

To prevent the piano from following this command you can filter out volume messages per PART. Here’s how
Press [EDIT]
Press Track Select button [1] to view PART 1 parameters
Press [F6] Rcv Switch (Receive Switch).
The last parameter on the screen is Expression - uncheck the box for PART 1 - this will mean your piano sound will not respond to cc011 Expression.

Now you must [STORE] you newly created PERFORMANCE - you can give it a NAME by going to [COMMON EDIT] > [F1] GENERAL > [SF1] NAME
Press [SF6] CHAR to enter letters to NAME your work, Press [ENTER] enter the name.
Press [STORE} and select a location in your 3 USER banks of PERFORMANCES.

We mentioned you can do this in VOICE Mode
Call up VOICE: PRE 1:014(A14) Piano & Strings
Elements 1-4 are the Piano and Elements 5-8 are the Strings.
You can program individual Elements to respond to controllers by doing what we call “biasing” the response of the Element to a particular controller. This is a deeper level of programming and is covered in depth in the Power User article: Working with and Understanding Physical Controllers
