Just set up Logic Express with the Motif XS.  When I change the bank on the Logic side, it doesn’t change the Logic bank; the voice number changes and corresponds appropriately, but it always keeps the same bank:  GM.  I have the program box checked, Motif set up in song/performance mode with or without the mixer mode (it doesn’t matter).  How do I set it up to select the other banks?  I have initialized all the different banks but the only think that ever actually changes is the voice...it always stays in the GM bank.

Re: xs and Logic Express...trouble with bank selec

You need to assign bank select messages to the instrument in Logic.
The messages are listed in the Data List for the XS and will look something like
MSB=63 LSB=1
The MSB tells logic that the next number is a bank select message and the
LSB will tell logic what number Yamaha is using to select what bank.
You will find this window under the options menu in the environment .
Look for Define Custom Bank Messages.

Re: xs and Logic Express...trouble with bank selec

Thank you for your quick response!  I was easily able to open the table to Define Custom Bank messages, but unsure what exactly I am to do here.  I also found the Bank Select Table in the Data List in the XS manual, but still not sure what numbers go where.  I am not familiar with editing MIDI.  MSB is 0 for GM voice, 127 for GM Drum, 63 for Presets 1-8 etc.  Do I use these numbers and where do they go for MSB and LSB?

On the other hand, is there a significant need to even have Logic send this information?  If I set up a song/performance under the Mixing function with the various sounds I want on the various channels on the Motif, and un-check the program box on Logic, the end result is what I want to happen...I just want to understand how this is supposed to work in case there is a reason.

Re: xs and Logic Express...trouble with bank selec

Since I understand your confusion in this window I thought I would put
together a little video tutorial on just how to set this window up. I had done
one before but I think this one is better since it goes into detail on how
to set this up. Take a look at it and if you have any more questions let
me know.
The file is here.....

if the file does not download by itself you may have to click the
“download now” button halfway down on the second page.
I hope this helps to clear up any questions on this subject.

Re: xs and Logic Express...trouble with bank selec

Thank you so much for your video tutorial. I recently bought the MO8 and I run Logic on my MacBook Pro. I found that the Logic Reference manual did not do a very comprehensive job of telling you what to do once you GOT to the “Define Custom Bank Messages” screen.

I came across your tutorial last night after doing a search on this site and was relieved to find your explanation. It was very easy to follow and understand.

Many thanks for taking the time to do this and help people out who are on the verge of losing their minds. Much appreciated.
