Following on two years after the original Motif, a new chip delivering 128-note polyphony was central to the ES specification. Also making its debut on the Motif ES was 'Phrase Factory' a loose amalgam of features based around a library of some 1700 individual arpeggios. The new arpeggios have the ability to recognize played chord shapes (chord recognition) and can be applied to Voices and/or (multi-voice) Performances five at a time.

Arpeggiated phrases are also available as instant backings for Patterns. Combined with the wickedly expansive Loop Remix feature from the RS7000 and voila! You've got yourself a complete Phrase Factory.

As well as enhancements to the sequencer in terms of multiple insert effects (8), the Motif ES debuted a ribbon controller, handy DIMM memory, and even handier USB connectivity, plus a substantially enhanced relationship with computers. A Multi Part editor helps streamline your mixes on a computer.

With a substantial-sized wave ROM (175 MB) that includes a beautiful 3-layer grand piano, orchestral instrument samples, and multiple multi-sampled 'Mega Voice' guitars and basses.

Although the Motif ES remains an outstanding instrument, widely used in hip hop, and almost omnipotent as the go-to touring keyboard, the currently looming Motif XS will replace it as the flagship Motif in April 2007.

If you already use a Motif ES you won't need telling how excellent it is. If a new, or even pre-owned Motif ES is coming into your sights, these instruments are built like tanks, offer commendable compatibility with models up and down the food chain, and sound terrific. You're in safe hands with a Motif ES.
