Does anyone know the size of the samples in the PLG100XG?
Is there a need for such a key board?
Is it possible to make an XG bank on a key without inserting a board? Or will nothing work without this PLG100XG?

Hi,

I don’t know the actual size of the PLG100-XG’s sample ROM. Comparing the numbers (480 instruments and 12 drum kits) to other known XG sample ROMS, I’d say it’s probably around 2-4 MB.

Most of the XG instruments from Yamaha (including MU modules, QY sequencers and PSR keyboards of that era) share large parts of their sample ROM. If you’ve played an XG instrument before, you’ll probably recognize many of the voices. They are nothing special, but may still be useful depending on your preferences (check out JayB’s demo of the QY100 to see how XG voices can be tweaked).

Although the Motif ES voices sound better, and the XG voices can be replicated using its internal synth engine, the Motif is not XG compatible (it won’t respond to XG-specific MIDI messages). This is why the PLG100-XG was conceived.

Thank you, Henry!
The PLG100XG is only good for playing XG Midi files on Motif Es, and apparently it doesn’t make sense anymore.

Well… I would say that the PLG100-XG is for those who are comfortable programming XG MIDI.

Although the PLG100-XG voices sound dated by modern standards, they can be manipulated. The downside is that you’ll probably need something like XGedit95 running on your computer, in order to access all of the parameters.
