At some point Yamaha is going to have to release a new Flagship synthesizer that takes advantage of Midi 2.0, and MPE (Midi Polyphonic Expression). Also Yamaha is going to have to come up with an answer to Roland’s Plug Out concept and their Model Expansions concept that essentially lets a Fantom owner extend their synthesizers without any end in sight. But a new Flagship won’t matter if the Synthesizer Name sucks. IMO Montage is a dorky name for a synthesizer. Consider this list of kewl names for a synthesizer:
Predator
These are Synth names that have kick, character, style, pizzazz, umph, and Savior-Faire. On the other hand IMO the name Montage is bland, uncool, mediocre, uninteresting. The name Montage alone had a negative impact on sales. And although Yamaha added a new large touch screen interface, the color scheme of the User Interface is drab (and can’t really be changed by the owner) And the layout of the UI (User Interface) is no where near as kewl as the screen layout on the Motif, Genos, Fantom, Nautilus, or Kurzweil 2700, Kronos, or Oasys. Whatever the new Yamaha Flagship Synth is going to be, it has to have a name that entices, excites, and seduces. Also the User Interface needs to be at least as clean and as elegant as the Motif, Genos, Fantom, or Nautilus. And for Pete sake, lets have some real color for the synth. Black is good, White is good. But what about, Red, Yellow, Mauve, Koolaid Purple, Navy, or Teal. We know that whatever Yamaha comes up with its going to be high quality. Yamaha has an excellent reputation for quality musical instruments. But the next new Synth Flagship has to have a good name, come in a good color, and have a good user interface. The unique color of the Motif XS, the nice screen layout, and the kewl name “Motif” all worked together to make one helluva statement that many musicians simply couldn’t resist. C’mon Yamaha get it right this time. |
