I need an extra midi out, I think. I recently started using Mac/MainStage patches to add new sounds and am trying to find a set-up to include them in the mix. So far, I have to choose between Motif xs8 Control/Midi Interface mLan or USB. I haven’t found a way to get midi out to the mac when it’s set on mLan. Current set-up for home studio Cubase recording on pc with motif, mac/instruments, mic:
Motif xs8 mLan out to PC/Cubase (Control/Midi Interface is set to mLan)
Problem - to use mac midi I can only use it when set to USB (vs mLan) and similarly, to use the mLan, it has to be set to mLan (vs USB). Is there an extra midi out on the Motif xs8 when the Control/Midi Interface is set to mLan? I’m sure this would be a piece of cake for one of you - if you’d be so kind as to correct what I’m doing wrong - I’d be most grateful! |

We’ve been down this path before…
It appears that the most recent Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver supports only up to OS 10.14/Mojave. You could try contacting Yamaha Support and/or Steinberg, but I doubt they’ll be helpful. Yamaha apparently has a tendency to abandon support of older models, and the XS is now two generations behind current ones. If you really need for things to work as you desire, perhaps you should consider abandoning 10.15/Catalina and install 10.14/Mojave instead. |

OK. Of course, it would have been easy to get the MIDI data you need if mLAN was working with the Mac. However, it is possible to get 5-pin MIDI output from the XS while using mLAN. The trick is to route the data via Cubase by having a track set so that its MIDI Out goes to “MOTIF XS8 MIDI OUT”. The XS8’s 5-pin MIDI-Out will then provide the needed MIDI signal, and could be connected to a MIDI-to-USB interface if needed. Just be aware that most inexpensive MIDI/USB cables don’t work well, so if you do this get something decent. See the second post in http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/457221 |

I can assure you that this will work if the ports are properly assigned - I’ve used this approach myself.
