Happy holidays fellows I’ve been down for a while, and going back to my FireWire setup with my XF, I need a little info because I’m not getting any audio output, though my DAW is receiving data from FireWire. I’m troubleshooting the reason My FireWire goes XF--> PC--> Speakers plugged into PC. Should this be all I need? I also have 2 cables from the XF L/R output that go to a focusrite audio interface. Just wondering what I’d need with FireWire only? Are the L&R;outputs needed or not in order to hear? As I type this, it looks like an idiot question. I’m away from the keyboard for a couple more hours and it’s been running through my head Many thanks for any ideas Rich |

With an FW16E installed in the XF, and speakers connected to the XF’s MONO/L and R line outputs, you’d have some choices of audio routing. See http://www.motifator.com/index.php/support/view/part_two_motif_xf_firewire_monitor_setup |

Thank you for that link........i’’l spend a little more time reading. At this point, I can record multiple tracks into my DAW via firewire. I just cannot hear ANY tracks playing unless I change the audio setup to another ASIO option. Then the playback is heard. Odd i’ll start from scratch again. thanks+ |

I wanted to post a pic as a follow up. This shows the playback devices on my computer. My default has always been the Scarlett audio interface. So I’m wondering, Do any of you FireWire users use the Yamaha steinberg FW WDM Audio as a default Playback option In Windows? I’ve never selected this before..... my default playback device has always been my Scarlett 2i2 (as seen in the pic). However, when I select the Yamaha device and hit the TEST button, you can see the green meter show an audio signal, but I do not hear anything.
So, any ideas if I should be hearing sound with the steinberg FW device?
Thanks Image Attachments

Hi Richie, You’ve got an audio interface battle going on and only one can be in use by your computer at a time, unless your DAW supports using one interface for input and another interface for output. Which is unlikely. In order for you to record with and hear the Scarlett, it will need to be chosen as the ‘in use’ audio interface for your DAW, which is what I believe your picture shows. In order to record and hear the Motif XF via Firewire, it will also need to be chosen as the ‘in use’ audio interface for your DAW. If you can’t make one the input interface and the other the output interface, then you can only use them one at a time. The reason you can’t hear anything the way it is currently cabled is very likely because you don’t have a DAW audio track either in record or ‘record ready’, which is when your DAW will monitor incoming audio signals. (The XF analog outputs in your case, providing you assigned the correct inputs to the audio track in your DAW and the XF is indeed cabled to your Scarlett as you’ve suggested). The way you currently have it cabled makes the Motif XF firewire interface superfluous, and all it is doing is sending audio via firewire to the DAW, and you can’t monitor your DAW because your XF’s analog outputs are cabled to your Scarlett and the Scarlett is the in use interface. Very short answer: Monitor the output of the Motif XF when you wish to use the Firewire interface on it and monitor the output of the Scarlett when you wish to do anything else, such as record guitars and mics. |

Thank you. I do understand your point about not running two audio interfaces. I likely wasn’t clear. I’ll try to rephrase.
In the pic I attached, I changed the default interface in the computer FROM the Scarlett 2i2 TO the steinberg FW interface.
Thanks again |

If the steinberg FW interface is chosen as the default interface, you need to plug your Motif XF analog outputs into your powered speakers. This will allow you to hear your Motif XF as well as what comes back from your DAW at the same time. If the Scarlett is the default interface, then you need to plug its outputs into your powered speakers, instead. I don’t see any use for your Soundblaster here and it won’t sound as good as either interface option. |

Thanx Phil and others. Working fine and I gave up trying to figure out what changed in the setup during my hiatus. Now I can do the FireWire recording into my DAW using headphones to monitor. When I switch back to the Focusrite ASIO, the external monitors are already connected. While I often joke about my “dementia” and memory issues, my wife is beginning to take it more seriously. Forgot what I was writing about, but thanks again. |

No worries Richie, Headphones are a great idea for that and save time with no need to be messing about with cables. |
