I’m sorely missing a numeric keypad capable of directly recalling a voice or performance. Here’s an ironic display of it’s absence and importance.
Motifator tutorial starts off with:
Ok...now, where does the user even start to guess where that is because theres,no category indicated. Is there something I’m missing or do I have to use the dial to scroll through 1000+ names??!! Am I missing a hidden trick here? Can I just use a numeric keypad to punch in 079 (assuming I’ve chosen the right bank)?? Can I somehow use SF6 NUM? Can I do a “text search” of the name the way my other workstation works? Kurzweil kept doing this to me too- kept adding or removing the keypad to various models. I’m a die-hard numberpad user and I could use a little help. MOXF does a great job with favorite buttons, but really the panel is very centric to assuming you already know the location of the patch you want, very little help getting to patches quickly if all you know is the program number or name. Perhaps I’m missing a trick and would be grateful.
Thank you

This might be a bit confusing for a new user, but I’m also confused. Â :-) You seem to be quoting from http://www.motifator.com/index.php/support/view/mox_side_by_side_volumes_for_performances, which is a support article for the MOX. However, you’re posting in the MOXF forum, and your member profile indicates Motif ES usage. Which model are you using?
Â
Presuming you have a MOXF, you won’t find the “Lake Side” Performance at USR1:079 - that’s its location in the MOX, but it’s Performance USR1:010 in the MOXF, also known as USR1 A10. I know that because I searched for “Lake Side” in the MOXF Data List (http://download.yamaha.com/file/60483) - see page 45.
Â
The Data List can be useful, but once you’ve chosen the correct bank, a “trick” is to know the correspondence between the numbered locations and letter Groups A~H. Each Group contains 16 locations, so…
I hope that helps. |

Thank you 5pinDIN. I blush because being called a “new user” is akin to being carded at the liquor store (at my age ;-) My first Yamaha synth purchase was 1991 and I’m an avid fan. But I have also purchased 5 or 6 other workstations in the last few years on behalf of the large contemporary church where I am the keyboardist. I purchase Kurz, Korg, Yamaha, specifically so I can leverage their strengths collectively. Some I have “retired” because they lack flexibility or *usability* I need LIVE on stage. Keypad entry function is just something I use avidly on all the my boards that have them, and it is missed on all the boards that don’t. Having said that… I don’t use one particular model. I am a potential buyer of any/all of the models - new or used. Currently, I am in the market to buy either a Moxf8, or an SP70xs (yes, 70 bc 73-76 keys is actually my sweet-spot of range due to weight issues of the 88. Both are currently at similar price and I wish to fill in the flexibility gap of Seamless Sound Transition left by my Korg Krome. But based on your answer regarding sound selection limitations- patch selection is apparently not an area where Krome fails. Regarding the reference to the MOX tutorial - it’s just a reference. I was trying to demonstrate when a user might be presented with just a program number. Point taken about Patch List - I’ve since printed it off. I was trying to avoid having to lug 148 pages around just to find a sample—I had to do that with my old Kurzweil SP3 which I promptly “retired” as soon as I could because it too was a nightmare to try to get to a sound patch quickly- not optimal, but I will take your suggestion to pocket. Sorry, but in my opinion and experience, spinning a dial wheel to scroll through lists of sounds is not the most efficient method if that is the only way to get to a categorical search. It has its advantages as a supplement method, but it is time consuming as a primary method. If you are on stage and say - hey, I think I want to insert a brass section on this song later this morning—whipping out 148pg guide is not going to happen. For example - the S70/90xs (and frankly a LOT of other Yamaha models) has the Category Banks organized and Labeled with the actual category names printed right on the panel next to the buttons (ie., Piano, Organ, Brass, etc). THAT I find most useful as an alternate or even primary route to selection - especially if there is no Number Pad entry and the only thing you are left with is the “Wheel of Fortune” ;-) If all I ever had to compare was Yamaha, I suppose I would be more comfortable with the limitations the sample selection provides on this model. But my Korg Krome has spoiled me for past 2yrs with providing at least 4 different selection methods which take nanoseconds to pull up: by touchscreen category, by bank #, by Number Keypad direct entry, or by Textual Partial/full Name search. However, the Krome has it’s limitations too—such as only being able to do individual part volume control to two parts, not 4 (like MOXF). So....that is why I am here—looking at the MOXF. But I’m looking at other Yamaha models as well. Despite my negativity about the Sound selection flaws - I think the rest of the features are top-notch and I’m quite convinced I’ll likely go with this model or the used S70XS (for same price). I just saw that there were a lot of “Hints” in the MOXF manual - which I have read front to back - so I thought maybe there was a trick I was missing. Sadly, it doesn’t appear so. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I will pay it forward if I’m every presented ability.

Are you familiar with Category Search, page 26 of the MOXF Owner’s Manual? |

Thank you for replying. Yes, I have the manual printed out and page 26 says I am limited to either the dial or the Dec/Inc buttons to move through all the choices. So I need to 1) use the category search button 2) use the cursor button to move to main category field 3) use another cursor button to go to sub 4) press Enter to actually load up the voice options 5) select the voice with ether the cursor button or data wheel and 6) press Enter to select voice. 6 different steps to find one voice. I was hoping I could just press a category bank button (ie. PIANO) and then scroll to a choice and hit enter - like on the S90xs which is only 3 steps to a voice. Or better yet, a favorites button- 1-2 clicks. Now that you mention the manual, I do not see any way to assign frequently used patches to any Favorites buttons. That would help lesson the steps required to get to a voice. I originally assumed the 16 buttons (Numbered 1-16) could double as a quick access to stored patches- I am not seeing this is possible. It appears the closest way of achieving this is to set up a 16 part song. So in order to recall patches I have to go to song mode, look for the song I created and hit Mixing mode and then I can select the parts using the Numbered buttons 1-16. Not a deal breaker, but again perhaps I am not the ideal user for this layout. But there’s still a lot offered in this unit that makes it desirable. |
