First of all I have to say that I really enjoy playing on this keyboard in voice mode and love the sounds I can make with it.... but .... All I want to do next is to set some kind of drum beat going, then add other voices on top. I don’t want to lay down individual tracks, I want to experiment live with different voices playing together. So far I have failed miserably to work out how to do this. Another thing I noticed. I have a voice that I use in voice mode that plays a particular Arp pattern, but when I load that same voice and use it in Pattern Mode it plays totally different to in voice mode. I’m not a technophobe and can find my way around most equipment fairly easily. I’ve been a software developer for the last 30 years. What I’m trying to say is that I’m not a thicko, but I do find the interface of this keyboard very unintuitive :( Can some kind person point me in the right direction please? Where to read about doing this sort of thing, or even better, a video or 2 to show me what to do :) |

These might help:

General MOXF support articles:
Much of the MOX information will also apply:

The MO’s are very “deep”, and it takes some time to feel comfortable with one. I think any effort expended is rewarded.
Some videos for sale:
These in particular might be helpful:

That’s a brilliant reply (as usual!!) thanks very much. This will give me something to look at over the upcoming Easter break :) |

I am monitoring the Montage very closely to be honest but the videos so far haven’t really shown if it differs in workflow etc from my current keyboard. |

All the different modes confuse me. I don’t know which mode I should be using to do what and there seems to be inconsistencies between the modes. Favourites in Voice Mode aren’t in other modes is a major annoyance for me! I’m wondering if the Montage will cut down on the number of modes which may sway me towards getting one. |

I’ve not had the time to look at those links yet but will do this weekend. Last night I had a play around in song and pattern mode. I loaded each of the pre-loaded songs/patterns and played the individual parts to see what voices they were made up of. There were a few voices that I really liked but I couldn’t find the voice name anywhere! I spent a while pressing buttons trying to find the voice name and failed. |

I suspect that trying to understand every aspect of the MOXF at once is leading to frustration. You might find it easier to learn by taking things a bit more slowly, one step at a time. Basic explanation of the modes is on page 23 of the MOXF Owner’s Manual, with more detail on the pages following. I suggest that you start by familiarizing yourself with Voice mode. You don’t need to “get” every detail, but since Voices are the basis for Performances, etc., it’s a good place to begin. By the way, the Owner’s Manual provides only an overview of operation - much more in-depth information is in the MOXF Reference Manual (http://download.yamaha.com/file/60478).
Â
Many functions in the MOXF are context sensitive - some things only work in specific modes/manners. For example, see the section on using the Performance Creator on page 31 of the Owner’s Manual. While I can empathize with how you’re feeling (I was there, too, when I got my first Motif), please understand that it’s a bit difficult to reply to non-specific issues. I hope the above helps. |

I think they’ll help, and if questions arise, please post.

The previously referenced support article about using a Mixing Program live should help you find which Voice is used in a Song/Pattern Part. |

Thanks once again. I’ve read a bit of the stuff you’ve linked to and am now able to find the voice names etc. I’ve also added some voices to an empty pattern and started playing around with that. Great fun :-) |

You’re quite welcome. I’m glad you’re becoming more familiar with your MOXF, and more importantly, that you’re enjoying it. |

I’ve had a lot of fun creating a few Patterns over the last week or so :) I did waste some time trying to switch on the Arp setting for voice number 5 in the pattern until I finally found on the internet that you can only have 4 of the voices with an Arp switched on. Having found that information I was less frustrated as I realised it was nothing I was doing wrong! One thing that I find difficult is knowing where to start exploring all the hundreds of different Arp patterns. I know there are different groups of Arps but can’t work out what some of the abbreviations mean. Is the only way to find out what they sound like to just scroll though them all? |

Excellent!
Â
Yes, Arps can be turned on for a maximum of four Parts at a time. However, once you record the arpeggiated notes to sequencer tracks, you can turn the Arps off for those Parts and turn them on for others.
Â
See http://www.motifator.com/index.php/support/view/mox6_mox8_painting_drum_arpeggios_to_the_sequencer That support article should help with some abbreviations, and also how to record Arps for more than four Parts. It deals with drum Arps, but the concepts can be used with other Arps. Also see http://www.motifator.com/index.php/support/view/recording_drums_to_the_moxf_pattern_mode There are more articles about Arps and other topics…

@5pindin I see what you mean about this machine being very deep. Good God there’s loads tucked away in menus and sub menus, enough to keep me tweaking for years :-) I was honestly thinking about getting a Moog Sub37 in addition to this keyboard so that I could play around with all the knobs etc but now I feel I have enough playing around to do on my MOXF6. One thing they do a lot on the Moog type synths is to start with an init patch (I think that’s what they call it). Is there any way to do similar on this keyboard? Start with a simple triangle wave for example and tweak that? |
