Zo gauw de NAMM nadert ontstaan er meer en meer lekken, en synthesizers lijken altijd de reden. Vandaag is de Yamaha Montage aan de beurt, en eerlijk is eerlijk: het gáát ook echt wel ergens over! We hebben het hier over het nieuwe vlaggenschip van de Yamaha synthesizers.

Drie nieuwe vlaggenschepen

Inderdaad, het zijn er zelfs drie. Inhoudelijk dezelfde machines, maar in de uitvoeringen 61 toetsen, 76 toetsen en 88 toetsen. De looks zullen u bekend voorkomen, Yamaha houdt graag van een uitstraling die zichzelf al bewezen heeft. Want inderdaad, de populaire Motif XF is duidelijk een voorouder. De nieuwe Montage is gelukkig niet zomaar even ‘iets beter’, de nieuwe capaciteit van de Montage is enorm.
Twee klank-engines

Voor de Montage gebruikt Yamaha twee engines: AWM2 en FM-X. De AWM2-engine mag nu wel bekend worden geacht, niet waar? Deze wave-player van Yamaha zorgt ervoor dat de talloze klanken pico bello worden voortgebracht. En dan gaat het hier wel even om een kleine tienmaal de capaciteit van de Motif XF! De polyfonie is verdubbeld, en het aantal effecten is verdubbeld. In straattaal: u kunt zich flink uitleven. Het grappige is dat u zou verwachten dat u capaciteit onbenut gaat laten, maar uiteindelijk gaat u alles echt wel gebruiken. Wat u uiteindelijk zult ervaren is dat uw muziekproducties simpelweg beter gaan klinken.
FM-synthese

De andere engine, FM-X, is een echte FM-engine. FM-synthese was al bijzonder toen het werd ontdekt, het werd in 1983 een commercieel succes door de Yamaha DX7, en in de periode erna bleef het bij vlagen populair. De reden voor deze populariteit is eigenlijk heel eenvoudig: deze synthesemethode is uiterst expressief en gedraagt zich erg muzikaal. Dat deze engine in deze Montage zit, in combinatie met de AWM2-engine, is een sterke zet van Yamaha. Het is verleidelijk om te beweren dat u nooit meer een andere synthesizer nodig heeft. Over een paar jaar zult u echter zien dat Yamaha het tegendeel gaat bewijzen. Maar voor nu is het natuurlijk helemaal top!
Bediening

De bediening is weer prima voor mekaar. Links de faders en LED-encoders, rechts het managementgedeelte. In het midden zit ditmaal een zeer fraai touch-display, in kleur. Hiermee navigeert u eenvoudigweg door de Montage heen, en eigenlijk hoort dit ook gewoon helemaal thuis in 2016. De nieuwe Super Knob is een speciale encoder die meerdere klankparameters tegelijkertijd kan aansturen.
Mogelijkheden genoeg dus om u jaren mee te amuseren, met recht het nieuwe vlaggenschip. De Yamaha Montage is weer precies een reden om te gaan twijfelen tussen hardware en software. Want met zo’n instrument is dit beslist nog geen gelopen race! Het is zielig voor uw spaarvarken, maar u en de Montage verdienen elkaar. Houd een oogje op de productpagina’s voor de actuele leverdata en prijzen.

I’m really curious about the specs on this new workstation.  It says it has FM X.  I wonder if it will have 6 operators and 32 algorithms like a true DX7.  Or, will it only have 4 operators?

Well, 4-operator/8-algorithm FM isn’t as bad as it’s sometimes made out to be, because there are 8 waveforms, while the DX7 is sine only.

I’m actually hoping for more than what the DX7 offered, because it’s monotimbral (the DX7II is dual timbral) and only 16-note polyphonic.

Compatibility with 4-op and/or 6-op patches would be nice, since there are a lot of good ones out there, but the “X” might imply a lot more.

We’ll see…

“Compatible with Motif XF libraries.” No onboard sampler? A souped-up MOXF? Not a replacement for Motif XF but a new product line leveraging Reface engines?  Hmmmm.

If priced right, time to upgrade my MOX.

- What does the 32 parts reference?
- Do you think the 4GB waveform is the user editable integrated flash? (It said the preset waveform was almost 10* Xf size.)
- Perhaps the CV is simply expression pedal jack?

It’s kind of neat that last year Yamaha returned Sequential’s name. Just recently, DSI added “DX-style” linear FM to the Prophet 12. And now, possibly, Yamaha returns with a solid FM synthesis platform. It’s very neat to have this vantage point of history unfolding. These instruments are interwoven into humanity. And we can participate in the weaving.

Ah, the 32 parts relates to the XF’s 16 parts in Master Mode. … I have yet to use that aspect of the XF, so it’s not even on my mind.

@5pinDIN, I also hope and sort of expect that FM-X means more than FM a la DX7 or DX11 (or reface).

For me people are thinking too retro, in the forums its always like “will it include AN1X, will it include DX7, will it be like FS1R” etc. Seems like people (in the forums) would be happy if Yamaha presented a Synth which would just be the addition of all they had done in the past.

I would prefer if they would show some new ideas, presented in a stringent and well thought through concept. It does not have to include every synthesis method ever done.
