I wonder if the AWM 2 engine will be implemented with the FM synthesis in order to recreate acoustic sounds as well… it would certainly be interesting, though some posts suggest that it won´t be possible to mix the two engines within a single voice. How were the patches designed in the SY99?

If SY99 type synthesis was possible Yamaha would have certainly mentioned it on the website. The only AWM/FM combination that they mentioned was through a PERFORMANCE.

“How were the patches designed in the SY99?”

Each voice could have 4 elements, including:
- 2 AWM elements
- 2 AFM elements
AFM was a 6-op FM with the possibility of using samples as modulators

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY !!!!  NOW !!!!

Someone might willingly take your money (but who knows how much), and it will be months before the product is released.

You think so?  Wow!  It’s been 6 years since they released a new Motif.  So after all of this time, you mean they only plan on announcing the new keyboard at NAMM, but it’s really months away from being released?

I’m starting to rethink all those mean things I said about touch screens…

I’m still not a fan of them, although I’ll admit that my willpower seems to be weakening.  :-)

I’m hopeful with all the buttons that still seem to exist, there will be some redundancy between them and the touch screen.

Is it just me or is that screen smaller (at least vertically) than the one in XS/XF? That can’t be right, can it?

The display in the XS and XF is QVGA (Quarter VGA), 320x240 or 4:3 aspect ratio. More recent displays use “wide screen” aspect ratio. If the Montage display is only as wide as the XS/XF one, it wouldn’t be as tall. If it’s as tall, it will likely be wider.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_aspect_ratio

It usually takes at least 2-3 months after the introduction for product to get in the pipeline and at dealers. In addition, the XF Fully Loaded promotion runs until March 31, and Yamaha probably would like to see any remaining XF stock significantly reduced. Now that the Montage cat is out of the bag, that might not happen fast enough.

So while I have no “inside” knowledge, I do think it’s going to be a while - probably no later than May/June. Like many other things about the Montage, we’ll see…

Maybe I’m just a little anxious.  If this thing turns out to be what I’ve been waiting for, I’m ready to place an order today.  It’s funny because when Ableton finally announced Push 2, it was available that day, and they were taking orders for it immediately.  I received mine at the end of the first week.  I guess I was hoping that Yamaha was ready to hit the ground running with this since it’s been soo long since they released a new flagship.

You’re comparing hardware to software, but perhaps I’ll be proven wrong. Sometimes demand causes a company to change schedules. We should know in a few days.

The XF has a 5.3” display, 4:3 ratio, with 320x240 pixels, dimensions ~ 10.8 x 8.1 cm.

The Montage has a 16:9 display with 800x480 pixels - to me it looks like the vertical dimension is roughly the same, which means a diagonal size of 6.5” (~14.4x8.1 cm) or 7” (~15.5x8.7 cm).

One more thing that I noticed looking at the photo of the rear panel - it seems that Montage no longer has the LAN capability.

There’s:
- Analog in L/R (not visible but it’s obvious it’s there)
- Phones
- Analog out L/R
- Assignable out L/R
- Sustain
- Foot switch
- Foot controller 1/2
- MIDI in/out/thru
- USB MIDI
- USB
- AC in

That’s it.

I do use Ethernet, but I’m hoping that USB on the Montage is 3.1 SuperSpeed. The XF has USB 2.0, but implemented so badly it’s only marginally faster then 1.1.
