Oftentimes the death of a music celebrity is characterized as a ‘loss’ whereas in all honesty the artistic output of the artist may well have dried up years and years earlier. But there are exceptions: Buddy Holly, Hendrix. John Lennon… And now, David Bowie, who just released a new album, a musical and even what seems like a self-created obituary-cum-farewell message on video.

Assuming, unlike the video’s namesake, Bowie will not be returned to us anytime soon, a raised glass to one of the most consistently challenging, influential and industrious artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Maybe 69 is the new 39? Either way, we have truly lost a guiding light. RIP David Bowie.

One of the truly great artists of our time.

I could name so any times where he has been inspirational, but my own abiding memory of him was his performance of Heroes at Live Aid.
