Someone please explain Patterns, Phrases, Sections and how they coexist among each other.

I understand how you can sequence in the Pattern Mode.

I understand how as the first step one sequences on a blank Pattern.

I understand how you sequence a Section at a time (intro, verse, chorus, etc).

I don’t understand what Phrases are, as well as the 256 Phrase limit in a Pattern, where they come from and why the limit is 256 Phrases maximum.

I don’t understand what good Sections are when you can easily reach the 256 Phrase limit in just one 8 measure Pattern.

There can be a maximum of 16 Sections (A ~ P) in a Pattern. Up to 16 tracks can be used. The data on each track in each Section is a Phrase. Multiplying the max number of Sections (16) by the max number of tracks (16) results in 256 Phrases max.

[...] I don’t understand what good Sections are when you can easily reach the 256 Phrase limit in just one 4 measure Pattern.

Let’s say you generously spread those four measures across four Sections (only one measure per Section). Let’s also say that you have data on all 16 tracks. That’s still only 64 Phrases (4 x 16), so I’m not sure why you think a Pattern of four measures can have 256 Phrases.

Hi 5pinDIN!

I was wrong on the number of measures, it is 8 instead of 4.

As noted in this previous Post: http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/471052/

1) I’ve got my Performance called up.
2) I press Record and select pattern.
3) I select Number 6.
4) I select Section A (my pre intro, a drum fill, which is ARP 6).
5) I select Length to 001.
6) I press record and play the intro.
7) I go to the Pattern Mode Button and press Play to hear my recording of Section A, and it’s perfect.

Time to record Section B.
1) I select Section B (my intro, which is ARP 3, that has ARPs on all four Voices.
2) I select Length to 8.
3) I press record and play that section.

I then get an Error Message that said “Phrase limit exceeded”.

That is what prompted my question.

Something doesn’t “add up”. It doesn’t matter whether Section B is 4 or 8 measures long - if you recorded only 2 Sections (A and B), even if you used all 16 tracks, that should only be 32 Phrases.

Either the MOXF forgot how to count, or something that you didn’t fully describe is happening. Since I don’t have a MOXF, I can’t check how it operates. However, you can determine how many Phrases the MOXF “thinks” were recorded…

See page 102 of the MOXF Reference Manual for the following:
Press [F4](PATCH)
Step through all the Sections (not just A and B, but up to and including P) and see how many Phrases the MOXF indicates were used.

Please let us know what you find.

jerrydpi, there are several ways to really clog up the sequencer with phrases and arrive at the point you are at...a bunch of phrases you didn’t even know were still there.

As you record and re-record things, you will be piling up extra “old” phrases that you thought you walked away from if you are not very careful.

Here are a couple of threads from the XF Forum (used to see you there!) that may be helpful.

I don’t do the sort of thing you are doing all that much, but maybe these threads will help a bit.

I am sure Bad_Mister will offer up some insight at some point.

Hello cmayhle,

How have things been going for you?

It’s been a while since we talked, so Happy New Year to my buddy!

I’ll check tonight, but I’m sure the answer is that since I have been re-recording the same Section several time by choosing “Replace”, the old data is still there and that’s why I’m reaching the limit.

That being said, why does the old data remain when you want to replace it?

That’s like keeping a Dr. Pepper (or your favorite scotch) that’s been diluted by the melted ice in your glass when you want to fill the glass up again.

I would prefer to throw out the diluted drink and fill it up with a new fresh drink.

I can see a situation where on the third take that you nailed exactly what you wanted to play, but then you get a message that says you exceeded the Phrase limit, so SORRY!!

Take care!

Jerry

Thanks, that’s a GREAT article!!

Jerry

Thank Bad Mister! But I’m glad I could help. I’ve found that there is too much to learn all at once. Everybody here has been a great help.

Cheers
