As with song mode you can control swing in the play effects screen on pattern mode. Its non destructive so you can play arround with it.

One of the very powerful functions on the XF sequencer are the Play FX. These can be used to set a “feel”, a groove template. This can be applied after-the-fact. Basically it works similar to quantize, which is apart of this whole thing. Note events are positioned on the track according to the selected quantize value. For sake of explanation, when QUANTIZE is set to quarter notes (480 clocks) the smallest musical subdivision you can document is a quarter note… This regular Quantize can be set to musical subdivisions and can be applied on the way into the track or after-the-fact.

The Play FX are a sophisticated real time quantize where you can reposition notes (and more) to change the feel during playback. “Swing” is a combination of timing and duration. It is not just when the notes happen, its also how long they last. You can setup the Play FX parameters so the whatever you play will be repositioned by these offsets. The fun thing is they are initially non-destructive so you can “try out” the FX before you commit.

For example, if you have trouble playing with a “shuffle” feel, you can setup a PLAY FX grid that automatically sifts everything thru this shuffle groove template that you create. Record your basic straight groove quantized to 16th notes (120 clocks) then apply a real time PLAY FX such that you are quantizing to a sixteenth note triplet… Strength = 100%

Now that is a severe (strict) use of this function, settings in-between include tweaking the Strength (%) Quantize, which allows you to shift things only part of the way to the strict subdivision.

The PLAY FX can be applied per track. Things like GATE (note duration) only affect Voices that are set to Receive Note Off (non-Drum sounds). Play FX are initially applied non-destructively, but these edits can be made permanent by either using the NORMALIZE PLAY FX Track Job, or placing the track in OVERDUB record. These actions will rewrite the MIDI data on the tracks and will “zero out” the PLAY FX screen.

PLAY FX can be reached from the main SONG or PATTERN screen at [F2]

These same type of controls are a available for Arpeggio Phrases as well, and are apart of what we referred to unofficially as the “Phrase Factory"… Because of the amount of change you can generate with any of the provided content with tools like PLAY FX and REAL TIME LOOP REMIX, etc.

From a previous article: (applying the Swing Quantize and Rate to a straight 16th note hihat)

HOW THE PLAY FX SWING OFFSET WORKS
If you apply a sixteenth note swing quantize what you are doing is delaying the even numbered 16th notes by a set amount. So for example, say you record a straight 16th note hi-hat pattern. With strict 16th quantize the notes will fall as shown below in the left column - what happens when you apply a Swing Rate=24 @ 100% is shown in the right column:

strict Q------------- SwingRate = 24 clocks
001:1:000 ---------- 001:1:000
001:1:120 ---------- 001:1:144
001:1:240 ---------- 001:1:240
001:1:360 ---------- 001:1:384
001:2:000 ---------- 001:2:000
001:2:120 ---------- 001:2:144
001:2:240 ---------- 001:2:240
001:2:360 ---------- 001:2:384
001:3:000 ---------- 001:3:000
001:3:120 ---------- 001:3:144
001:3:240 ---------- 001:3:240
001:3:360 ---------- 001:3:384
001:4:000 ---------- 001:4:000
001:4:120 ---------- 001:4:144
001:4:240 ---------- 001:4:240
001:4:360 ---------- 001:4:384

Every other 16th note is delayed by 24 clock pulses. To accomplish this same thing on the PLAY FX screen you would simply use the QUANTIZE = 16th and set the RATE parameter to “delay” each even numbered segment by +24. This would yield the exact same results. This based on the concept that swing is adjusting (holding back) the timing of the off beat segments. This would give you swing 16th notes.

Listen closely as you change the RATE value, hear how the even subdivisions are delayed.... Instead of each each pair of sixteenth note in a eighth note being 50/50 percentage-wise they are subdivided 60/40…
The first sixteen note is 144 clocks and the second sixteenth is 96 clocks, this gives the sixteenth note hihats a swing feel.

Okay, but I went into the playFX , I was not able to quantize different channels with different values of quantization is it like that on the motif?
one quantization fits all?
One value number for all the channels? is that a fact?
Can’t you have one sixth of a nota on channel 2 1/120 channel 3?
I went to job for quantizing it was giving me same values for all channels once I was inserting a specific value. Can’t u have different channels with different quantized values?

Sorry. The questions do not make sense. Please check the Reference Manual on how to enter values in the QUANTIZE screen and PLAY FX screen.

Of course you can.
You go into playfx and turn on the quantize value on each channel, to suit your needs independently for any of the 16 channels available.
