Hello, BadMister. Tell me, please, how to save multi presets which were edited in Yamaha Motif XS Rack to my IMac. If it is possible, write the details, please.

The most elegant way is to use the Motif-Rack XS Editor Standalone/VST version 1.6.0

The Editor can run along side your favorite DAW, or if you are using a VST3 compatible DAW, it will run inside as plug-in. It not only keeps track of the current 16 Voices assigned h the Multi setup, it can store all your User Voices as well.

the Editor is available free at the official Yamaha download site:

http://download.yamaha.com

Select your country
Type in your MODEL NAME: Motif-Rack XS
When the SEARCH RESULTS appear, verify: Motif-Rack XS
Download the Editor Standalone/VST for your computer operating system

You will also need the USB-MIDI driver for your computer operating system.

If you use the Editor to store your Multi Setups for each composition, it will not be necessary to STORE them to the internal 128 MULTI locations in the Rack XS, you can simply Save the editor file on your computer. It can automatically restore all your settings when you open the DAW project.

Bad_Mister, thank you for your reply! I have installed Editor 1.6.0 and USB Midi driver. What button should I press in EDITOR to save 128 MULTI PRESETS to my IMac?  Which one should I press: bulk dump- data Sync or import? I want to save 128 multi presets in my Mac and after saving I would like to create new presets in Rack. Someday I will need my old presets. I would like to take them back and to save my new presets to my Mac.

Each MULTI represents a single composition or project. Save an Editor MULTI with each composition.

If you have 128 Projects, you will save one Multi with each Project. It is that simple. Work on a song, save its Multi. The Editor saves the CURRENT Multi setup plus every USER Voice in the current Rack xs internal Library, per project.

There is no bulk dump that includes all 128 Multis and Voices, that is simply too much data for a simple bulk dump.
And since you play one Project at a time there is never a need to save 128 Multis, really. Not any more.

Once file size surpassed 1MB of MIDI bulk data (back with the Motif-Rack ES), it was discovered most sequencers would choke on that much data, and dedicated Bulk storage devices have gone the way of the dodo…

You must realize that the Motif-Rack XS data management is designed with how it is most likely going to be used, in mind. So that when you are working with an external sequencer, you will recall 16 Voices and their mix setup for the Parts. These Voices could be recalled from the over 1000 Presets or could be gathered from the hundreds of custom User Voice locations. Say on different projects you load in different set of custom User Voices, or you wind up creating new ones specifically for the current project. How can you ensure that everything gets restored for each and every project.

You can either make the product extremely expensive by having unlimited individual Voice storage on board - so the unit could/would hold every thing for every project you will ever record… Or you can create a situation where not only does the EDITOR (MULTI) take a snapshot of the current 16 Parts and all there settings, but every single Voice currently in User memory and every Mixing Voice you created specifically for this project.

This way when you save your DAW Project file it includes everything in your Motif-Rack XS at the time you created the project. Trust me, it works because it is total recall for each Project.

I understand your desire to keep all that data, and try and manage it yourself.... because that’s how one used to have to do things. But in this age where you are integrating with external devices, use the capability of each device for what it can do best.

Storage? The computer does this extremely well - and has plenty of it (which is in large part what you’ve already paid for). By the time you are on your second 128 Multis, what if you have changed the User Voice library from what was loaded into the Rack XS in the first 128. With scores of Voice libraries available and more coming all the time.. You may amass hundreds more Voices than you can hold in the Rack XS itself. It will happen.

Now you want to play something from the first 128, what do you do? What do you do?… Try to figure out what voices you need and in what locations they need to go to get recalled properly? It would be a nightmare. Believe me, a nightmare.

Yamaha will not even let you go down that dark path. With the Editor you have not only the sounds you used, but every sound you could have possibly changed to via a Program Change, you have every thing that was in your Rack XS at the moment you created that Project. One Project, one Editor MULTI file.

Managing hundreds of songs, compositions, projects and what Voices you might have used is better served with the Editor and its ability to save, store and recall every thing you need per session. Storage is not a problem, the computer has tons of room to hold everything.

What you are asking for… A bulk that bulks all 128 just does not serve a purpose any more… Particularly since the MULTI without the Voices is useless.

One final point, as mentioned, since the MULTI (and all the other data) can be recalled per Project, it is not necessary to hold them in the Rack XS itself. The Rack XS could be used entirely as a place to hold your Setups for live gigs… The EDITOR addresses the current MULTI’s edit buffer, it does not permanently overwrite any data in that Multi… If you don’t press STORE, what ever was in that Multi returns when you move away. The Editor is non-destructive to the data stored internally.

Hope I’ve explained that well enough.

How are you using MULTIs? For sequencing? Other use? Let us know.

Bad_Mister, thank you for your reply!  I am a musician, I play the piano, keyboards. My main work is connected with one band and use Yamaha Rack Motif XS. I edited 128 banks in MULTI. Each song uses two or three banks. I divided keyboards into two - four parts in each bank .New versions of these songs appear and I need to change the voices in Multi. I want to save my old ones and if I need them I wanna use them again. Is it possible to do it? Write me, please, the details, if You can.

Answered already.

Each one is stored separately. One Multi = one file
128 Multi = 128 Files

You did not understand me either? Huh?

There is no bulk of all 128.

I think what he’s saying is (and this is my question too), that after we create a Multi for a song, we want it stored offline.  And I want to also keep mine on the rack ready for a gig.

Just a simple operation: backup the multis.

I have perused the Bulk Dump instructions in the manual, but I’m confused as to how to use the Jobs function.  I see no Bulk Dump in any Utility screen.

You can Bulk Dump the current MULTI by holding two buttons simultaneously

[MULTI] + [ STORE]

Yes, page 11 in the Owner’s Manual

Not anymore. No purpose.
Must be I’m the only one, let’s follow the road map:

Back up Rack XS with 128 multis=128 files.
Install 24 multis=24 files.
Back up Rack XS with 24 multis=24 files
Re-install original 128 multis=128 files.

I’m looking for a bigger word for tedious.

How about “ultimately frustrating”?
(Yes, that’s two words, but I’m trying to be polite.  :-) )

I presume your post was in reaction to this thread:
http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/475575

Owner’s of the Rack XS eventually determine that besides not having a keyboard, sampling, and sequencer found in the Motif XS, it’s missing a “few” other conveniences as well.
