Bad_Mister, Technical information on the MOTIF line is your speciality (on this Forum :), so I have a Technical question for my buddy (vs an opinion). And if any other Forum Member knows the answer, please do so. The MOTIF XF Owners Manual states: Secondly, the user interface and the color LCD display introduced with the MOTIF XS has been improved dramatically, making it even easier to view important information, such as the Voice program name and number—even when another keyboard is placed above the MOTIF XF onstage
My two question are:
2) Can’t the same name moving/various color schemes be done on the XS as well? Thanks! Jerry |

Both the XS and XF use LCD panels from the Kyocera KCG057QV1DB family of displays. Assuming that the specifications I was able to find for the panels is accurate, the type used in the XF has slightly better brightness and somewhat faster response time than that of the XS.
It’s likely that if Yamaha chose to make the necessary code changes in the OS for the XS that those features could be included. The spec differences between the displays might slightly impact how the XF scheme looked on the XS. |

According to their respective manuals, the ES used a 240x64 mono LCD, compared to the 320x240 color LCD used on the XS and the XF. Basically, the XF can display much more information than the ES because of its larger display, and is easier to use because you don’t have to switch between a lot of display pages. Look at the ES manual and you will see how much more information is shown on the XS and XF displays compared to the ES. |

Hi moxrox! But the XF Manual says the Display has been dramatically improved over the XS Display (not the ES Display), so I was hoping someone could tell me what the technical differences were between the XF and XS Display that makes the XF Display dramatically improved. Thanks! Jerry |

As I said above (which apparently you’re unimpressed with :-)Â ), both the XS and XF LCD panels are from the same Kyocera KCG057QV1DB family. They aren’t all that different from a specification standpoint. IMO, the difference in appearance is mostly due to what is being displayed, not what it’s being displayed on… and the rest is advertising hyperbole. |

To the best of my knowledge:
This series of displays, which are CCFL backlit, seems to have been discontinued by Kyocera and replaced with ones that have LED backlighting.
Information on current Kyocera LCD panels can be found here. It might be possible to contact Kyocera to get complete specs for specific discontinued models.

5pinDIN, I meant no slight to my man! It’s that I’m obviously naive enough to believe the Yamaha statement that the XF Display was dramatically improved over the XS Display. Say it ain’t so Joe! Thanks, Jerry

One person’s “dramatic” could be nothing to you. The back story, due to the blue/green nature of the Motif XS there where a whole lot of people (apparently) who had issues with seeing the XS screen. It may mean nothing to you but apparently it is very dramatic for the blue/green color blind. There were calls where the customer was instructed to hit the [F6] tab which is now highlighted, customer says “Mine is not highlighted”, but due to the nature of the XS screen this was a problem. This predicated the color scheme retro fit for the XS. It was that significant a problem. For some the cursor would disappear (from view). That’s pretty dramatic. Other improvements have to do with how the XF allows you to determine what is shown and where is perhaps, not dramatic to you, but is to the hundreds we heard from that use it professionally on stage, and thankfully there were a lot of those types (given the wide success of the series). Study was done to dramatically improve the visibility of the information in the screen by contrasting colors for backgrounds - more information is available to the player. My own observations conclude that most people do not read much from the main screen other than the Voice name, but it’s great to be able to have info when you need it. |

5pinDIN,
Bad_Mister answered my question, but as a side note, there was a Post on May 26, 2012 where a Forum Member was asking for info on replacing the LCD Display on his XS
He was given CRYSTAL DISPLAY KCG057QV1DB-G070 MOTIF XF as the Yamaha Part Number. I find it interesting that the Part Number (and Display) is the same as the Part Number for the XF, should the XF Display need replacing. As Bad_Mister said, I take it that the XS and XF Display are most likely equivalent, it’s how/where the info is displayed that differentiates the two. Thanks! Jerry |

As I said, the Kyocera KCG057QV1DB family of displays has been discontinued. Apparently Yamaha no longer has the -G88 available, but has direct replacements in stock for the XF. As I’ve also been saying, the two displays are very similar - to the point that the one used in the XF can easily replace the original one in the XS.
