While I know how to get to the page where sustain pedal is On or Off for the particular voice/part in perf mode, sometimes the ability to place a check mark there, = ON is not available, while most of time it is. Does this have anything to do with the ARP programming for the voice/part? |

The Sustain parameter will appear for any “Normal Voice”. Normal Voices are those that are non-Drum kit Voices. Drum Kit Voices are designed to accommodate drum and percussive sounds which are generally set to NOT receive Note-Off commands, this way they can play their complete envelope without the need for the player to hold the key. Drums quickly become non-playable when they respond like the so called normal musical instruments which, in general, will sustain while the key is held, and jump to the Release Time parameter as soon as KEYOFF is received.
In other words, when you press a drum Kit key, notice how the full audio of the assigned sound plays without you having to hold the key… This is due to the RECEIVE NOTE OFF = OFF setting for the KEY
Try a crash cymbal for the most dramatic, example… Imagine having to hold the key down while the entire sound plays out… You want to just hit the key (as a stick would hit the cymbal) and have the entire sound play out. Percussive instruments cannot sustain (that’s a generalization of course, because the pianoforte is actually a percussion instrument that does sustain...) But what an elaborate system was invented to make that happen! Also (again another generalization) most Normal Voices are 8 Elements (or less) making one instrument sound, while a Drum Voice is 73 Elements where each Key can be a separate instrument… (in some cases two or three Keys are used to create different articulations: triangle open/triangle closed, guiro short stroke/long stroke, hihat closed/pedal/open, etc.) So the Sustain parameter will be greyed out on any PART containing a Drum Kit Voice, it has nothing to do with the Arpeggiators. Although, as explained in the recent set of articles on the Arpeggiator, the Sustain pedal is actually a MIDI command HOLD 1, when you assign a Voice or Part to be controlled (played) by an Arpeggiator the sustain pedal takes the place of your hands. It does not sustain the sound, it “holds down the keys”. The difference is important to understand. If you expect the normal sound sustaining you will be scratching your head, stepping on the pedal during arpeggio play will simply allow the Arpeggiator to continue to play the Voice/Part. Hope that helps. |
