There’s an interesting full review of C7 in February’s issue of Sound on Sound. Overall it’s very complimentary and sees it as a big step forward for Steinberg, though a few issues are noted as still work in progress.

I’ve not really used it in anger yet, but many aspects of it are really excellent. I think the Mix Console is great, but is going to take some getting used to!

I’ve upgraded and I’m slowly getting my head around the mix console.  While I’m not there yet, I can see myself getting used to it.  I was really comfortable with the previous mixer view and I hope that I can do the same with the new one.

I too would describe as ‘a work in progress’, and because of lingering performance issues, especially on Macs, it’s not quite there yet....in spite of new features. Perhaps the February update will offer improvements..................frank

Frank, I haven’t updated to 7.0.1 as yet because it is listed as a “pre-release” update and as a consequence has not competed full testing.  What’s your view here, is 7.0.1 safe?  You mention February, is that when the full release comes out?

Hi Peter,
Yes, the 7.01 update appears to be safe, and it did fix some problems present in 7.0 so it might also be deemed to be an improvement. The February update will hopefully fix more problems, but how many is uncertain. There may be more news about this in a few weeks. Cheerio........frank

Thanks Frank - and hopefully they will be fixing the CC121 EQ issue!

It’s fixed as of yesterday. Please visit the Steinberg web site for the latest CC 121 update. I installed it yesterday and EQ is working again. Yea!  :)

Yep, installed that, and the EQ in the CC121 is working again!

However, I see that the reversed Gain/Frequency/Q Factor issue has not been resolved. And Steinberg don’t appear to have offered a reversal option in C7.  Very frustrating - after all, this is a dedicated controller!

Hi Peter,
Well, logically the order of the knobs should be reversed (or the Cubase software altered), but on the other hand, it doesn’t seem to bother most people and personally I had no trouble adapting to it. What was more important to me was that all the CC121 controls worked, and that has been achieved. I’m not sure if the order will ever be changed either since the CC121 is, by modern standards, starting to age. However, I am so used to using it now that I would be lost if it ever did become obsolete. :) Hopefully it will continue to be supported in the future.

The latest Cubase update, 7.0.2, is due for release on February 18 and information on what has been fixed and what hasn’t can be found here:

Sadly no mention of performance issues being addressed, especially on Macs, but we remain hopeful they will be covered in the future. For now, many are sticking with (or returning to) version 6.0.7 or 6.5.x for major projects.............frank
