I recently picked up a used ES8 and was wondering if I need a Smart Media Card to perform updates or if I can use a USB stick.

I would go with the USB Thumb Drive. I’m sure that you can get Smart Media cards in the ‘Shop’ here, but in reality, they just don’t hold enought data.

Have you checked the Operating System to see if it needs Updating?
Just in case.....

With the Motif OFF…
Press and HOLD REMOTE & REC and Turn it on. Hold Remote and Rec until the Operating System appears.

Looking at my notes, and it’s been a while since I did the ‘Update’, you ‘may’ need to use a ‘Small’ Smart Media Card. They ‘should’ still be available in the ‘Shop’ of the site.
