What is the source of these songs? Are you loading Standard MIDI Files? |

Load the SMF as a song, then press the Edit button. You will be able to see the data for each track. Look for Program Change messages. If these are absent, the ES will default to the piano voice on each track. This is most likely your problem. If the SMFs are supposed to be GM or GS compatible, there should be a GM mode message, probably on track 1. If you have no idea what I am talking about, let us know. |

You are probably running afoul of the way the ES saves the mixing data for songs and patterns, particularly the Phrase Header. This confused me for a while when I first got my ES. Read this thread about Phrase Headers. You may find this thread also helpful. |

Please remember SMF or Standard MIDI File, is a file format that can be read by almost any piece of MIDI gear. It does not therefore contain any specific settings for any specific piece of gear. So loading a SMF into the ES and then making edits with ES parameters, say you select new Voices, change the effects assigned, etc., etc. and now you want to SAVE that work… you must SAVE it in a Motif ES file format. Saving it again as a SMF will strip off all of the Motif ES settings you made… because remember the SMF is not specific to any one piece of gear. So your Motif ES parameters (like the unique Motif ES Voices and Effects you selected) are not going to translate as “standard” So SAVE your data in a Motif ES file format - either ALL (.W7A) or ALL SONG (.W7S) |
