The max time for a single sample in any Motif is 6:20.

If yours is “about” 6:15 I suspect it’s actually just a few seconds longer :(

please explain why 6:22 is max. Isn’t that the max time/length of the on-board sdram of 128 meg regarding 16/44 stereo?
Surely, a 1 gig board can hold a wave longer than 6:22 at 16/44 stereo, if not, please explain motif’s scheme.

Thanks. I see now how the 6:20 min@16/44 stereo is referring to the ISS and 128 meg sdram.

1. One may load a longer audio file from usb/ethernet to flash directly?
2. What is the length of sampling time per 1 meg 16/44 stereo?

So, the ISS function is quite specialized as opposed to loading a sample directly to flash.

3. Even if the sample is in flash and one needs to edit it using sample edit functions such as trim, truncate, etc., one must load it into temporary sdram to edit?
4. So, if you have any samples that are larger than 128 meg in flash, you can’t edit them using sample edit parameters AND one can not hear those samples if they are in MONO!!??

A single sample in any Motif...Classic, ES, XS or XF...cannot last longer than 6:20. That’s just a limitation of the OS. This has nothing to do with how much sample RAM is available.

Most samples will be a lot shorter than that, the only time it becomes an issue is when you are trying to sample entire songs (or continuous tracks of entire songs).

There are workarounds.
If sampling a vocal part for a song, typically the vocals are not continuous so they can broken up into verses and choruses, etc.

A 16/44 6:20-long stereo sample uses 64MB of memory. So if your sample meets those parameters, two will fit in 128MB.

It seems we’ve addressed some of this before:

Sorry about this, I had forgotten some of that previous thread!
However, I hadn’t realized the limit of 6:20 max EVEN if you have more ram installed as flash AND also the fact that 128 meg sdram technically can hold twice the 6:2o.

It would be nice if Yamaha could/would in a future workstation allow a sample to be played fully according to the sample ram size and fully edited without having to use the sdram as the edit location and the size limitation therein.
