Well hello again to ya’ll!
As I’ve said before in another Forum area, I now need my first USB Flash Drive.
I’m going to upgrade my Motif XF8 from 1.12 to v1.3.
I was advised to look at Lexar and Sandisk, the latter I know to be high quality at least for SD cards.
Below is from the Walmart.com page.
I’m only concerned with the ‘Securely encrypts files’ line.
Is encryption going to be any problem installing the v1.3 upgrade on my Motif XF8?
Thanks in advance.
Marc

High-speed performance

For the encryption software to work, you need to install it on your computer and then enable it. You DON’T HAVE TO USE IT. It’s optional. Of course, for it to work with the Motif, you MUST NOT USE IT. You can just format the USB drive on your Motif before you start using it for saving your important data.

And, if you care about the encryption software thinking that you might need it some day in the future, you can keep a backup of the software on your computer before formatting.

Thanks!
I have just found the ‘Approved Thumb Drive’ Page this morning.
As usual, I order the more expensive ones!
Below is the approved one from the Yamaha page!
... Eleven bucks!  haha!
This is all okay as I have a massive itunes and photos catalog independent of the XF.
(a luxury of age is nothing gets to me anymore… it’s all good! :)

This saving of XF data to the thumb drive should go well as it’s all songs with no audio samples yet.
I’ve never worked with MIDI data yet too.
I have installed the two Flash Memory boards as well as the optional Firewire 1394.
I only have the ‘05 Powerbook G4 with the PowerPc processor which I’m not using yet for anything Motif. A new iMac arrives later this month.

BTW,
I’m now using 1.12.
Is it needed that I update to 1.2 then to 1.3?

IT’S INTERESTING THAT THE UPDATES ON THE USA PAGE STOPS IN SEPTEMBER WITH NO ACTUAL
v1.3 OPERATING SYSTEM UPDATE.

At any rate, the new iMac arrives later this month.
I probably need the IEEE1394 FireWire Driver. I’ll also be installing the Cubase IA5 that came complimentary with the XF last fall.

This is very interesting.
I’ve been a songwriter for the last 30 years when there were no cellphones, vhs recorders, DVD’S, CD’S, computers and microwaves! haha Nothing gets to me anymore at 56… it’s all good!

Thanks for any and all advice!
Marcus

I’m 64 and I decided not to go along anymore with everything that comes my way:
before you can handle it, it’s already out, obsolete or gone.

And, I think it’s good practice to upgrade your Motif as far as possible.
If only you perform the right procedure in steps:
BACKUP, upgrade, reset, RESTORE.

@;JOOP! ...
First of all, one is only as young as one feels!

RESET. ?
After backing up songs to the first thumb drive, confirming the songs are there on the computer,
then updating the XF’s OS to v1.3 from 1.12 XF using a brand new thumb drive that was used for downloading the update to the computer,
what is the reset procedure? ... utilities/factory reset?

Well, my brain just lighted! ...
Actually the next OS update that arrives will probably be done differently.
With Cubase in place with the firewire I can save all my songs with and without audio samples to the iMac then install the OS update.

Well, with Cubase in place and the XF connected with firewire and while songs and productions are being developed, I’ll be saving automatically into Cubase. If this is the case, there is the backup copy in cubase and on the iMac.
So the factory reset can erase whatever it does, Cubase has the songs or whatever projects are stored to it. yes?
Maybe this youtube is more clear....

please tell me what you think.

The Motif XF8 was purchased Sept.’11, and I love it!
I put both flash boards in and firewire expansion board,
The new iMac replacing the older PowerPc is here,
Cubase Ai 5 installed,
Firewire IEEE1394 v1.8 driver,
The iMac recognizes both,
I put both flash boards in and firewire expansion board,
The two Lexar thumb drives,
one Echo MX 16 GB backup drive for backing up the MotifXF 8’s All Songs no audio,
and the second Lexar JumpDrive Firefly 4gb for transferring the v1.3 OS update for XF from the iMac to the XF.
*MY ONLY GOAL IS TO EMPTY THE SONGS OUT OF THE MOTIF XF8 BEFORE UPDATING THE OS OF THE XF SO WHEN IT FACTORY RESETS AFTER THE RUNNING SYSTEM INSTALLS, I’LL HAVE THE MUSIC.
I did miss another post somewhere on the Forums about the thumb drive format and compatibility.
This real nice Echo MX 16 GB is not on the approved list for os v1.3 installation and has a format of
MS-DOS (FAT32).
Is it true this format is not a viable choice for compatibility?
After placing it in the XF, backing up the all songs, the process showed the Lexar on the XF but not on the iMac.
The Jumpdrive Firefly 4g is a ‘bare bones’ nothing backup drive ... this one actually appears on the verified approved list from Yamaha, but it is not out of it’s package yet and will be used for the OS update v1.3.
So, this brings me to Cubase Ai5,
Firewire 800/400 9-Pin to 6-Pin, Motif > iMac.

One way or another, I will save,
copy,
record to,
Cubase or something else, ...
...  all these songs that I’ve worked on while deciding which new computer to buy that would support everything.
Man, I’ll be happier when this learning curve of the manipulation of the technical hardware needed to get it all up and running smoothly is done and concentration can be focused back on the creative processes.
PeACe!
