If one quarter-inch trs wire is plugged into the XF in the L/MONO output does the board create a left/right mix into the plug or is it just the left output?

The manual needs to be updated since it does not state this.  It says:
Line level audio signals are output via these phone jacks. For monophonic output, use only the L/MONO jack.

Yes, that is the correct way to output MONO.  It is a sum of both channels.  As soon as you plug a connector into the RIGHT jack, the signals are split.  You can also take a look at this thread:

You need to use a TS connector, NOT a TRS connector.
