Hi all,

I watched this nifty video on YouTube where a well know rival keyboard to the Motif was connected to the Motif via Midi, then in the sequencer of this alternate keyboard the Midi channel, MSB LSB details of the Motif were entered against a given track. The player then recorded on the alternate keyboard a series of notes. The result was that the player had recorded the Motif Midi notes within the sequencer on the alternate keyboard and thereforehad both instruments playing when he played back the sequencer

That looked pretty cool to me so I dusted down an old Kork triton LE that I have had for years, connected it to the Motif and tried to do the same in Pattern mode, and yep, I’m stumped.

If I put the korg into sequencer mode I can trigger different instruments that are pre-set using the motif arpeggio output but that doesn’t seem right as it only works in real time and not from the sequencer, but I cannot find a way to state what MSB/LSB to transmit and on what channel anywhere in Pattern or Song.

I’ve had a plow through the manual a few million times and can see that Master mode may be able to control other keyboards but what I wanted to accomplish is nice and simple record in pattern (or song) mode using the Motif Sequencer to control both keyboards to double up what I can sequence

Now I know you can do this using Cubase, but I wanted to do it via the good old fashioned hardware as this is why I bought a workstation rather than a DAW .  Is what I am doing possible with the Motif or not please?

If so, some pointers to reading materials would be most appreciated, if not I shall just have to drink a beer instead to overcome my disappointment!!!

Thanks all

Steve V

I’m not certain which of your synths you want to control with the other, but here might be a starting point:

You might want to hold off on the beer for a while, as such consumption could lead to poorer reading comprehension.  :-)

Yes a great help 5Pin thanks :-)

The missing part was the track view to switch on/off the Motif as I wanted to use the Motif as the master and record within the Motif sequencer the midi to control the slave Korg.

This I can now do. As for changing the voice on the Korg, I assume this is done by editing the Midi recording and inserting a Program Change at the start. This appears to have the right affect as it looks like the Korg voice changes when I insert this event. I am now trying to fathom out how the Program Change data in the Motif relates to the bank/number stated in the Korg voices manual

Again thanks for your help 5Pin

PS I will now have that beer and toast your good health - Cheers :)

Program Change data in the Motif sequencer is handled with a single packed event.

MSB-LSB-PC

You will see an event that you can insert into the TRACK Data
From the main SONG or PATTERN screen
Press [EDIT] to view the EVENT LIST
Select the Track [1]-[16]
Set the EVENT TYPE = PROGRAM CHANGE

xxx-yyy-zzz where xxx is the MSB value, yyy is the LSB value and zzz is the Program Change 0-127

All MIDI devices use MSB/LSB Bank Select commands
MSB is Control Change 000
LSB is Control Change 032

Each of these has a value 000-127
So these two values together define the BANK number - this gives MIDI 16,384 banks of 128 Program Changes.

you need to find out from your KORG documentation the MSB and LSB values that they use.

They are most likely not the same numbers as Yamaha but that depends. Each manufacutrer can select the numbers they wish, except for MSB/LSB 000/000 which is universally used by GM protocol for GM Normal Voices. 127/000 is used for GM Drums.
