Hi It’s me again… lol

I’m trying to figure out if even possible, how to play a performance in performance mode with the local keyboard as well as a different voice in the xs using a controller board at the same time…
As far as I know you cant assign performances to a song/pattern
so I was wondering if there’s another way around this....

I’m using an xs7 with dimms and a cme-uf70 controller board..

I keep all my voices/performances in a master mode line up…
It would be great if I can assign Midi Channels to masters.. but I don’t think that’s possible…

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

No. Not in PERFORMANCE mode. In your Motif XS it is important to understand the following: When you are in VOICE mode or in PERFORMANCE mode the Motif XS receives MIDI data on a single MIDI channel. That MIDI channel setting is shown; [UTILITY] > [F5] CONTROL > [SF2] MIDI > Basic Receive Channel

When you place the Motif XS in SONG or PATTERN mode, the [MIXING] setup contains 16 divisions - each can be set to receive on a different MIDI channel if you wish. In fact each of the 16 PARTS can be set to any of the 16 MIDI channels as you may require.

Press [MIXING]
Press [EDIT]
Press [1] to view PART 1 parameters
Press [F1] VOICE
The MIDI channel can be set per PART.

As far as I know you cant assign performances to a song/pattern
so I was wondering if there’s another way around

PERFORMANCES can be copied to SONG/PATTERN MIXING setups. As mentioned above a MIXING can have its PARTS assigned freely as to their MIDI Receive Channel. So a PERFORMANCE which is 4 PARTS on the same MIDI channel can easily be replicated in a MIXING program

Go to SONG or PATTERN mode and press [MIXING]
Press [JOB]
Press [F3] COPY
Press [SF2] PERF
Select the PERFORMANCE and the attributes you wish to copy

This will bring the PERFORMANCE into the MIXING setup, set to playback exactly as it did in PERFORMANCE mode with some restrictions (you cannot record to the sequencer; you don’t have the same [PERFORMANCE CONTROL] functions ) But when you select the lowest numbered PART you can play the entire PERFORMANCE - because this COPY function copies the four PARTS to the four PARTS of the MIXING and assigns them the same MIDI Channel so they can all be played together

So say you direct your PERFORMANCE to PARTS 1-4
You can assign any VOICES to PART 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16 and you can transmit to them from your external controller - or from the XF keyboard when you press the corresponding [TRACK] select button [5]-[16]

So when you press [1] you will be playing your “PERFORMANCE”
when you press [5] you will be playing whatever Voice you assign to PART 5

If your external controller is set to transmit on [1] it will trigger the PERFORMANCE
If your external controller is set to transmit on [5] it will trigger the VOICE assigned to PART 5

Hope that helps.

In your previous post you said “I’m trying to set up a controller to play a performance from the xs while I use the local keyboard to play a different performance in the xs..”.

Based on the above (emphasis added), if by ”different voice” you meant to write ”different performance”, then you could follow what Bad_Mister suggested, but instead of assigning a Voice to Part 5, you can copy a second Performance to Parts 5-8.

Thank You Bad_Mister and 5pinDIN… You guys are incredible with the amount of knowledge and expertise in working with the xs/xf synths..

The owners manual is very thorough but can be a bit frustrating especially if you need to make a quick reference to something in order to achieve a result without dedicating a whole lot of time tying the pieces together…

Kudos to both of you
Sal
