Hi,

After watching the 1.3 OS video of the motif sending audio via wifi to a ipad app i had an idea.. Why cant we use the network port to send audio to a DAW instead of having to buy a fw16e. It is clearly possible for the XF to transfer audio of wifi, why not implement this (similar to euphonix mc mixers). Yamaha needs to compete with the new kronos and i think this would be a great way to. Design a driver for mac/windows to do this, we could use a crossover cable to go direct into the computer and send 16 tracks. Bandwidth wouldnt be an issue with ethernet. Firewire seems to be on the way out also..

Any comments guys??

I don’t know how is this done exactly. I hope the functionality of sending audio to iPad by WiFi is not just sending the WAV file produced by Motif XF and the iPad just streams and plays it…

Otherwise, this feature would be great to be used not just on WiFi and iPad, but with any network connection and a computer.

The recording feature writes the audio out into a file (WAV or AIFF).  It’s not sending a digital audio signal, it’s creating the file in real time.

I know I’m about to display extreme technological ignorance here, but I’ve been reading the owner’s and operations manuals for the xf, and I don’t get why the ethernet connection has to go from motif to router to computer. Why can’t the ethernet cable be used to directly connect the xf to a computer?

I would suggest it’s because of the Transit and Receive pairs needed for Ethernet communicaiton.  Going direct to the computer would require a crossover cable.  A router will perform that for you and eliminate the need for a crossover of the tx/rx pair.

So what would be the difference between the iPad and say a DAW like cubase. Is it because it isn’t sending audio in real time?

I just think yamaha could be putting the Ethernet port to greater use. Isn’t the motif like the only workstation with networking capabilities?

I’ve been using a straight Ethernet cable to connect my XF to my MacBook Pro as well as to my Dell Studio XPS Win7 PC without any problems. The OS can detect that a straight cable is being used and internally change the connections for you in software.

It all “depends” on certain things. :-)
