Hi Forum members and Yamaha representatives, This is my first post here. I wish I had more positive stuff to talk about, I just purchased a new Yamaha MOX6 4 days ago and I loved it but unfortunately it crashed and froze on my 3 times in less than 24 hours. By that I mean that it won’t generate any sound at all. It won’t change the voice, the knobs become non-responsive, toggle buttons not working, etc… I then switch the power off then on again and it is back to normal. If you are wondering what I was doing that caused this, then in all 3 occasions I was doing a different thing each time. You can also say it was normal usage and I think that this is a very weird behavior for this keyboard or any keyboard. You can say that it is completely un-predicted and the last 2 crashes happened in less than 30 minutes. I was working in pattern mode for these if you insist to know. No matter how over-powered or under-powered a keyboard is, It should never die on the user this way. This totally killed my creative flow and instead of finishing my song (which I forgot BTW after being interrupted twice) I am now attempting a factory reset. See for yourself here in this youtube video that I posted (I hated to post these BTW): Crash video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A4LmoBMNJ8&list=UUXK5_7bUPu__m_Hn7qSDMZw&index=3&feature=plcp PS>>> While it is in this frozen or crash state. Some functions still worked, the most important one actually which is that I was able to store my work. |

UPDATE: I have been doing some extensive tests for the past couple of hours and it seems to be that when I unplug the USB cable from the powered USB hub and put it directly into the USB port in my mac, the crash doesn’t happen anymore. i will keep my setup this way for a while and will report back if I got any crashes. If it remained stable, I will update the videos that I have on youtube to be fair. |

From page 58 in the user manual: “Avoid frequently turning the power on/off to the USB flash memory device, or connecting/disconnecting the memory too often. Doing so may result in the operation of the instrument “freezing†or hanging up. While the instrument is accessing data (such as during Save, Copy, Delete, Load and Format operations) or is mounting the USB flash memory device (shortly after the connection), do NOT unplug the USB connector, do NOT remove the device from the instrument, and do NOT turn the power off to either the instrument or the USB flash memory device. Doing so may corrupt the data on either or both.” |

When the MOX is connected to the computer via USB. The midi (when set to USB) automatically shuts off my other midi connected 88 keys keyboard that I use as a master keyboard with my MOX6. If the USB cable is unplugged from the computer while still plugged into the MOX, the midi ban is immediately lifted and the midi connected midi keyboard works again. When I was connecting my USB cable from the MOX into a powered USB hub. No matter whether the hub is attached to the computer or not, the midi ban remains in effect and it is USB exclusive. This means that even when there is no computer connected, the MOX6 is sensing a powered USB port and reacting to it. I do not think that the Yamaha engineers designed the MOX to deal with an unpredicted powered USB hub with so many devices connected. That I believe caused my MOX to completely freeze as shown in the video link above 4 times in 1 day. Once I took the USB cable out of that USB hub and whether now it is connected to a working MacBook air USB port directly or even disconnected and just lying on my desk, the MOX behaves just fine with no freezes or any other issues. So far so good. I will post an update if something else happened! Feel free to throw in your 2 cents on this issue as I need someone technical to explain it to me. Thanks. |

The MOX is not alone in not liking to be plugged into a USB hub. I have have many devices and peripherals not work correctly when plugged into a hub, but work fine when plugged directly into a USB port on the motherboard (normally on the back panel of a desktop system). I’ve even had problems plugging some devices into the front panel, using extension cables, or using cables attached only to the device and not to the computer. For best results (on anything, not just the MOX6), connect the device directly into the back of the computer (if using a desktop) and completely disconnect the USB cable from both the computer and the device when you are finished. |

Hello, I’m glad I found this thread, since I have the same problem: MOX6 occasionally crashes (freezes): sometimes in [SONG] mode, sometimes in [PERFORMANCE]. The only different thing is that my MOX6 is connected directly to the back of my PC USB slot, using USB cable. I didn’t find that the best practise was to disconnect USB cable when not using computer, so it is always connected in my case. Maybe this could be a problem? I am wondering if I should send my synthesiser to YAMAHA for better analysis? |

Hello, my MOX is connected via USB cable dirrectly to the PC and when PC is ON everything is OK. When PC is off, MOX will always freeze after some time. That is my observation. |

My MOX8 occasionally freezes when the USB cable is connected AND the computer is turned off. It never freezes when the computer is on. |

Hallo wizardgraphics, check this post in case it helps: http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/459879/
Having a USB cable connected to your PC, or MOX (regardless whether it is ON or OFF) shouldn’t be a problem!!
