My Windows 7 user name on my PC is: “Michael Trigoboff” (note the space between my first and last names). On page 42 of the XF Reference Manual, item 16 shows that you can enter a “Mount User Name”, which it says will then automatically fill in the user name in the “Network Password” dialog shown at the top-left of page 43. My problem: I can’t type a space into the “Mount User Name” field. I’ve tried with both an attached USB keyboard, and the built-in Motif character entry dialog. The weird thing is that I can enter my name, including the space, into the “Network Password” dialog. Is there some trick that would let me enter a space into “Mount User Name”? Or am I stuck having to change my Windows 7 user name? |

Can we assume you are using the “space” character from the XF character entry window and it is just not working? |

Michael is right. You cannot store a space there and many other special characters. I had to literally change my User Name from “Vikas Sharma” to “Vikas” because of this. Linux/UNIX usernames do not contain any spaces in them, but Windows and Mac OS User Names can have them. |

While a windows user account can contain spaces except if those spaces are the first or last character, this is usually not a good practice because this makes administrative tasks harder to execute… Additionally, maybe your windows user account is not the one you’re referring, but it’s instead the Name linked to your windows user account. To check for this, you should get a System Prompt window (press WinKey+R and there type CMD) Once you’ve got the System Prompt window (black windows with a blinking cursor), type WHOAMI and press ENTER key. You’ll get your windows account name, which is the text you must place for MOUNT USER NAME parameter on the Motif XF |

I wouldn’t say ‘solved’ as such, but I thought I should share what I had experienced/found. I cannot rule out the possibility of some workaround. |

A login name is like a “call name”.
The problem here is (a classic one) that people consider the

Thanks, everyone. I have surprising news about this. I’m not sure why I thought of doing this, but I figured I had nothing much to lose. I left my Windows 7 user name as “Michael Trigoboff”. I typed “MichaelTrigoboff” into the place that won’t accept spaces. Then, using the xf7, I mounted my shared folder. The “Network Password” dialog came up with “MichaelTrigoboff” automatically filled in. I hit [Enter], and… It worked!!! I have no idea how or why it worked. I feel like I dragged a goat out into the back yard and sacrificed it, and the Gods smiled upon my offering for reasons known only to them. (I’m a software engineer. I feel like that a lot.) Apparently the login process ignores spaces somehow or other. So Vikas can go back to being Vikas Sharma if he wants to… |

While I would never deny being “a bit crazy,” there’s actually a reason why I wanted my actual name to be my Windows 7 login name. Applications like Word automatically fill that name in when you create documents (like the Author property in a Word document). I figured it’d be convenient not to have to mess with that, and work with Office’s “automatic” instead of having to fight it. |

Cool. I didn’t know about WHOAMI. I tried it, and this is what it said: blackbird\michael trigoboff Blackbird is the name of my very fast relatively new PC. It’s named Blackbird in honor of something else that’s very fast. |
