Hello, i have owned this since 2003 with no issues, but a few weeks ago pressing certain panel buttons causes unusual behaviour.

2 examples of this strange behaviour are.....
If i am in song mode & press the “Category search” button to find a voice, the motif jumps to “pattern mode”. If i press the track 7 select button the motif jumps into “File mode”.

The button switches that cause the problems are limited to the last 12 switches on the right hand switch board. (PLG2, PLG3,Category search,G,H,Section,7,8,Track select,15,16,Mute\Solo).

All other panel switches are fine & show normal behaviour when pressed.

I contacted my nearest yamaha service dept & the engineer mentioned that he had not heard of this sort of problem with the motif, but he suggested that the tact switches could be the problem. I ordered 12 of these switches & replaced them yesterday, but the problem persists.

Has anyone experienced this problem with the motif?

Many thanks for any advice.

You don’t mention in your profile where in the world you are located, but you should call the Yamaha distributor (directly) in your part of the world. The numbers are always found in the back of the Owner’s Manual.

Thank you for taking the time to reply,I am in the UK. It was Yamaha i contacted in the first instance & they said it could be defective tact switches which i ordered & replaced.

I contacted them again the other day & the only other thing that they think it could be is a defective switch circuit board. As these are reasonably priced, i intend to order one & keep fingers crossed.

If it turns out that the problem lays with the main board, then it will probably not be worth going any further.
After a lot of searching the net i have only found one case of a Motif classic with this problem......unfortunately no result was posted.

I am having the same problem on my yamaha motif xs 7.......

I have never owned the motif XS or had one stripped down, but i suspect that the switch circuit boards will be of a similar design.

The panel switch circuit board that i replaced on my motif classic had a hairline crack across some of the tracks. The cost (Around £30) was quite reasonable for the new board.

It is an involved task to replace the board.....lots of components (including the keybed & main board) have to be removed to gain access.
