Just picked up a secondhand Rack ES to take some of the load off my tired old S90 (which I’ll still use as a controller), and am wondering if it’s possible to have the Rack ES filter out some of the MIDI CC/PC data it sends to either MIDI out or thru. I’d like to chain a Nord Electro off the Rack, but only want to send note events to the Nord.

The S90’s Master Mode provides pretty comprehensive control over which events get sent from its MIDI out for each zone… does the Rack ES have similar functionality or is that more of a controller function?

Just thought I’d swing by and update my own post… the reason I’d wanted to do this was so I could MIDI my S90 to my Rack ES in order to layer on 8 total parts for some fat patches, and I wanted to then MIDI the Rack ES to my Nord Electro to be able to add on a Hammond layer, BUT I didn’t want anything but sustain and note events transmitted from the Rack ES to the Electro… otherwise the S90’s controllers would also try to control the Nord.

I thought I wanted the ES to be able to filter those controllers from the outgoing MIDI stream but the Rack ES didn’t provide the master mode functions of the S90 and I never did find a way get what I was looking for, until it finally dawned on me (duh) that I could do what I needed to do using the S90’s master mode.

All I had to do was put the Nord on its own MIDI channel and set one of the S90’s zones to transmit on that channel, then I was able to use the S90’s TXSW zone settings to filter out all the controls I didn’t want sent to the Nord.

Works like a champ.

I never cease to be amazed at the depth of complexity and control of these instruments. Truly amazing.
