I installed the FW16E in the XS rack.
XS rack has OS 1.04.
MR816X is completely up-to-date, too.

I hooked up the MR816X directly to my Belkin fw-card with TI chipset. The XS rack is connected to the second fw-port in the MR816X.

Now the Y/S Firewire driver won’t recognize the XS rack. The control panel only shows the MR816X.
In my Control panel the FW16E is visible.

To my best knowledge I installed everything correctly.
I downloaded the firmware updater 1.07 but it won’t recognize the XS rack either.

Can anyone tell me why it’s not working the way it should? What am I missing?

Thanks

OJ

Okay, first welcome to the forum. We moved your post from the Motif XF heading where you posted it to the more appropriate “Motif-Rack XS” forum since this is the product you own and is the product your question is about.

The IEEE1394 Updater is unlikely necessary for your FW16E since I believe they all shipped at 1.08 (probably why the updater is ignoring it).

Let’s start our checklist at the Motif-Rack XS:
When you are using the Motif-Rack XS with the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver (YSFW) you need to verify the following settings in your Motif-Rack XS:

Press [UTILITY]
Select “GENERAL”
Press [ENTER]
On page 2 of 5 (2/5) ensure that the IEEE1394 Driver = FW
If not, change the setting, then press [STORE] to write this preference to your Flash ROM.
You will need to reboot the Motif-Rack XS for this setting to take place. Once it is stored it and rebooted it will remain from then on.

Next, you want to make sure that the MIDI communication is set to mLAN:
Press [UTILITY]
Select “MIDI”
Press [ENTER]
On page 1 of 6 (1/6) ensure that the MIDI IN/OUT = mLAN
Press [STORE] to write this preferecne to your Flash ROM.

Let us know.

That helped! Thanks. I missed the IEEE1394 settings in the menu. Couldn’t find it..........
Now I only have to figure out how to play and record the sounds in Cubase.
Feel free to refer me to a manual or tutorial to get me a quick start.

Now I only have to figure out how to play and record the sounds in Cubase.

We assume you have some type of controller device you are going to use to generate MIDI note-on events, etc.  The next step would be to ensure that you can send notes into Cubase from that device (whatever it happens to be).

Using the Steinberg MR816CSX and Motif XS/Motif-Rack XS with mLAN16E2

...although written almost 3 years ago - this applies to the Motif-Rack XS with FW16E (all software versions are probably in the “or later” category by now)…
