I could use some advice on how to record multiple MIDI tracks from the internal sequencer of the Motif XF into Logic 9. I am using the FW16 interface to do so. I have mastered (more or less) the process of sending multiple internal sequencer tracks from the Motif to L9 as audio files. I want to do the same with MIDI, and use the MIDI functionality in order to change the pitch of the performance and make edits, both of which are not feasible when recording as audio files. However, when I attempt to send them as MIDI files into L9, I do not get a satisfactory result. I have properly set the Motif to Quick Setup 2. What I get is a single track containing all the various track information, and more often than not, it is out of sync and the voices are not what I recorded into the internal sequencer. In L9, I have created individual MIDI tracks for each of the internal sequencer tracks. In L9, for example, Track 1 would show as “Program 1-11”, and the next track would have another set of numbers. It appears that one of the issues is that I have not properly assigned the specific Motif Voices used in the internal sequencer to L9. I do not know how to do this, so any guidance on the matter would be appreciated. If I save the performance from the internal sequencer as an SMF file, then I am able to load that into L9, and the tracks display as individual tracks. However, L9 uses its own MIDI voices to play the tracks, and, of course, I wish to record the MIDI data using the Motif’s voices. Thanks. SS |

Some time ago you asked about this and I referenced the Logic Tutorial in this forum. Anyway, the settings there would resolved this- namely, Project Settings>Recording>MIDI and check ‘Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording’
Similar answer to that above. Sync is dependent upon Logic being set to transmit via the XF’s Main MIDI port and by the proper XF Quick Setup settings. Preferences>MIDI>Sync and check allow to send Song Position Pointer while playing. Then, press the MIDI Sync Project Settings button at the bottom. It should open Project Settings>Synchronization>MIDI. Under MIDI Clock, check Destination 1 and navigate to the XF’s Main Port (#1). I also check both Transmit MTC and MMC… When recording the song, press play from Logic and not the XS...
You are not recording voices. You are recording MIDI. It is a fallacy that importing MIDI files is not working. They must be dragged onto External MIDI tracks set to the appropriate MIDI channel port in Logic’s Library, as I mention in this post. An understanding of the types of tracks in Logic and their function is critical and it’s the source of your problem… If you want the correct voices to play, either: 1) Save the song in the XF and recall it when you open the song in Logic. (I’m referring to blank tracks here. If you are manipulating the MIDI within Logic, only the voice settings and any effects settings need to be saved in the song)… 2) Call up the voices within the XF Editor and save it with the song’s name. Again, open it when opening the Logic project. 3) Manually insert the proper program change, continuous controller info within the MIDI tracks themselves via either the XF or Logic so that anytime the song is played it recalls the proper voices. 4) Locate a Motif XF environment, save it as a template and use to select voices in the XF. Save it in the project… |
