this happened once a while back - and I turned the keyboard off then back on and it recognized the cards - i have two of them.  but tonight - both - nothing - turned it on, off - nothing.

anyone have any idea if you can replace the reader in the keyboard?

Has this happened to anyone else?

My computer (via USB) shows the data on the cards...so i know the cards are not blank - but my keyboard treats them as if they were blank.

how can i get stuff on my keyboard now!  all my sequences! ??

Don’t worry. Time to go from SMC to SMC adapter and Dx cards.
An expense off $20.
Copy the data on the PC.

???  explain.  even with some other card adapter, when i plug the card into the keyboard, it won’t recognize it - so are you saying get a Dx card and an adapter to side it into the SmartMedia card slot?  that won’t work because i think my card slot “thing” is broke.

I read the keyboard can connect to a SCSI external hard drive- I’m going to get one of those tomorrow and see if i can copy my sequence files onto it and load them from it - does anyone know if that will work?

What other adapters have you already tried?

Joop means the XD card to SM slot adapter.

You present this as if it is the reader in the machine which is the problem. If you could only dig through the archives of about 6 years ago you woudl discover a lot of advice on things not to do to smart media cards - so your problem is more likely your card, not the motif’s reader.

Make sure you copy all of your data off from one of the cards as a backup.

You can then follow through on what Joop suggests - put that data onto an xd card and use it with the relevant adapter in the Motif. Other thing to try would be to reformat the card on the Motif (not on the PC)

Other more esoteric solutions involved programms such as SMPREP or other HEX editing software - this woudl fix the card to be readable but in doing so (as with formatting) render the data as unrecoverable so backup your cards before doing anything :)

Hope these thoughts help

I’ll try that with the card, but....the SCSI plug.

Can I go out and buy an external hard drive and plug it in and load sequences from that?  Does Yamaha sell them?

SCSI is obsolete.
Try that adapter.

Joop is correct.

The adapter is your best and cheapest option. XD cards are inexpensive too. One thought - whilst you can get some pretty large XD cards the Motif classic can still only read the top 128Mb of the memory - so no point getting a vast card.

Can you get SCSI - yes - probably on Ebay, but it’s time is done.

Cheers

thanks....

I have been hunting external 50-pin SCSI drives...not much luck.

I did see the DX cards and the SmartMedia adapter, but even then - if my Smart Media Card READER is going bad in the OTIF, that won’t do me any good.  If the card READER is bad, i have to go with the ONLY other way to get data on the MOTIF - and that is the SCSI port.

Correct?

Is the Smart MEdia card slot and the SCSI port connection the ONLY way to get data/sequences on the MOTIF?

Can i thought a computer hookup?

Help!

I don’t believe your card reader is bad.
The cards themselves have a bad reputation.
Forget about SCSI.

The original Motif could communicate with a host PC over USB using a File application, but it read the files that were installed on the Smart Media Card in the Motif so you are still no further away from that card slot.

I’m with Joop on this one - it is more likely a problem with the card than with the reader itself.

Cheers

ok, i just ordered a XD to SmartMedia adapter.

Now, what kind of XD card can I get?  WHAT SIZE?  DOES IT MATTER?

does the size matter?  Will the MOTIF recognize a 2 gig XD card?

what I see online is a “xd picturecard” - will that work?

Preferred 128Mb, the motif can’t see more than that.
If you buy a bigger card, create a 128Mb partition
on it b.m.o. your PC.

P.S.: buy that xD card in a shop; take your adapter with you to make sure it fits.

ok, I got an xd card adapter to Smartmedia.  All Walmart had was a 2 gig XD card,m so i got it.

Came home, put the XD card in the adapter - it fit fine, plugged it into the MOTIF and went to FORMAT and it says:

DISK OR CARD NOT READY

then i take it out and back in and then it eventually says

DISK OR CARD WRITE PROTECTED

!@#$%^&* there is no slot to switch over or nothing to make it write protected like SD Cards....!@#$%%^^

then i put it in my SmartMedia USB thing in my computer and it doesn’t even see it - it doesn’t even exist to my computer (PC, windows XP)

BUT HERE IS THE STRANGE THING!  Now one of my Smart Media cards works!  It’s as if, shoving something “new” in that slot did something?  I’m hoping they work come this weekend when I have to have those sequences loaded…

So tell me again - WHY NOT GET THE SCSI DRIVE?  these Smart Media/XD cards are buggy!

Can I buy a new card reader for inside of the MOTIF?
