i am in the biggest dilemma of my life. i am a amateur musician aspiring to be professional. i already have my old PSR2000 which i have hooked up with my computer to cubase 5 and vsti and i sequence in the computer. i basically do instrumentals of popular songs now and i intend writing and composing my own songs in the near future and sequence them.( predominantly bollywood songs in india which doesnt fall into one genre) After saving money for the past 3 years i have finally decided to buy a new keyboard. my band days are almost over ( for which i got the psr) and i seldom take my keyboard now out of my home recording. i was on the verge of buying xf6 yesterday when my friend told me that tyros 4 is also out. now after watching all those videos of motifxf6 and tyros 4 i am in a dillemma which one to go for. i dont have a guitar centre like thing in india where i can audition the sounds before zeroing in. the only way i can do it is to ask pros and see videos on internet. the local yamaha store doesnt have both the keyboards and they say i need to book it in advance for me to be the early bird in recieving either of the two i need more sounds ( more authentic acoustic sounds than synth with various articulations to make it realistic) and ofcourse arpeggios for thats why i am investing in a new keyboard. and i also have a bcf midi controller for cubase which i hardly use as it is not user friendly. so additional midi controller would be a bonus. and i have yammies hs80m which i love can someone help me with this? kindly ask me for more infor if you need thanks |

Since you were playing PSR, than logical answer could be Tyros4. But, since you said that you have plan to compose your own songs and need some new instruments (that could be from 3rd party sample libraries), Motif XF should be better solution. Especially since XF6 is cheaper than Tyros 4.

Two different monsters..The obvious, one is a workstation and the other is a arranger...I have the xs and instead of getting the xf I will most likely get the tyros 4 to pair with my xs |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGS_O0LRnCA I started out with a similar dilemma, when trying to graduate from my PSR. The above video cleared the dilemma for me. :-). I bought the XS. XS has reduced in price now, now that the XF is out. You might try XS. There’s not too much of a difference in features between XS and XF.... and you’d have some cash left to buy other things for your studio/ home use. Motif XS/XF!!! - Go for it!!! In my view, the Tyros wins in the built in Irish pipes sounds. But then, I wasn’t willing to fork out $1000 more for Tyros for its Irish pipes, which I would not use… other than to show off the pipe sounds. lol. There’s so much more I could do with Motif XS8. |

If you want quick and awesome sounds...Tyros 4. I have a Motif XS and love it, but if I had the money I would have purchased the Tyros 3 (for my needs). I have Protools and sequence mainly through that. If you use any type of computer sequencer you can equally hook up the Tyros 4 or XF and use it as a multi-timbral sound module...so than it just depends upon which has the sounds you like better. But...if you do use a computer sequencer and have the extra money the Tyros in my opinion would win hands down because you have the sounds you can trigger as well as expertly arranged styles that sound awesome. It also has the SA2 sounds which are phenomenal. If I had the money I would trade my XS in for a Tyros 4 with no hesitation (but I love my XS and am thankful for it). Everyone of course will have a different opinion. Hopefully with multiple posts and perspectives you will more easily be able to make a good choice. God bless |

Thanks guys for the reply The basic thing i want from the keyboard is the quality of sound and the number of sounds. in any ways i am not going to sell my PSR. It is still going to be there as a midi trigger or something. Yes i already have cubase and i do sequencing in it too. @creatsu Thanks for the PM. As you said not many people use irish bagpipes a lot. but there are other things. the sound in tyros is quite phenomenal with all those SA2 and richness. Are the sounds of tyros 4 and XF based on same engines?. i want to know whether there are possibility to replicate the same quality of sound in motif by tweaking and altering the knobs. For example i have saxlab vsti and i always find the sax to be very plastic in the vsti. and any amount of tweaking wouldnt get me close to the sax in my PSR which is awesome. i have been seeing the youtube link for the past one year each time when i was down on inspiration and thats why my dream keyboard has always been motif........ now suddenly this dilemma creep up i am basically want to get a pro keyboard for quality and quantity of the acoutic sounds which can be tweaked to sound real. so is this tweaking possible to sound close to realness with all those vibrato......harmony....and all those stuff close to origional pro keyboard is always a pro and i already have a arranger workstation in my PSR thats why i am thinking a lot. But if the sound quality of tyros is much much better and if motif cannot even come close then i might have to rethink and then wait up and again save for 1 more year and then get tyros… can you guys help me out |

If you do a search in the XS forum for comparison of sound, XS vs. Tyros 3, you’ll find a fair number of people who like the polished sound of the Tyros better. I don’t know what yamaha does differently, but many people have remarked on it. On the other hand, with the XS or XF, you can load up 3d party samples and sounds that can breathe new life into the XS. Tyros is presented as a ready-to-go board, the XS and XF as highly customizable (through endless tweaking). Personally I was turned off to how technical the XS is, I don’t want to be an engineer, I want to play music. Some people don’t mind though and appreciate the extra tweakablity of the Motifs. |
