Welcome to the forums. The MIDI file does not have sounds. What is happening is the original author of the file (obviously not you) selected a particular sound or VOICE to be recalled for each of the tracks. This is done by inserting a command, called a PROGRAM CHANGE, into each track. In order for you to change this selection of the original author you must either edit or remove the Program Change event from each track. If you change it, you can direct it to recall the VOICE that you wish to select. Or if you DELETE the Program Change event, you can then STORE a MIX containing your own selection for each track. You can view the EVENT LIST by pressing EDIT from the main SONG screen. Each track’s information can be viewed, in turn, by pressing the TRACK [1]-[16] buttons. Every Measure:Beat:Clock tick that has an event will be shown. An Event labeled “PC” is a PROGRAM CHANGE event, it will send a message to change the current Voice selected to play that track. If these program change events were not in the track in the first place, the file would make no VOICE selections and everything would be playing from the default piano sound. But all the sounds you hear are Motif XS sounds, the file has no sounds (because MIDI does not generate sound). If you would like to select different Motif XS sounds, you can do that. But without any knowledge of the file, we are going to guess that it is a General MIDI file (.mid) that is selecting specific sounds - this protocol allows for a list of 128 sounds in a specific order such that if the original programmer selected a FLUTE it will select a Flute in the GM bank of the Motif XS. All GM sounds follow a set order of instruments - this allows the file to work in any product with a GM sound list or bank. For more on how GM files are created please see the following article: A short tutorial: Creating Proper GM Files |

The file apparently has a GM RESET command - which as the article explains will undo and reset the entire unit. If you want to convert the file so it does what you want, you will need to edit it to your liking. The GM RESET is the very first command in the file - usually on track 1 F0 7E 7F 09 01 F7 If you remove this it will stop resetting your data. But you must create some start condition for all the tracks and store that in the XS MIXING setup. |
