Greetings all,

I am attempting to run Cubase 5.0 32bit on my Sony VAIO laptop computer(Windows 7 64bit Home Premium)The laptop has a 4pin firewire connection.I have it connected to my Motifxs8 from computer 4pin firewire connector to mLAN connection 1 on the Motif.

I have all the latest firmware, drivers, and updates installed on laptop and on the Motif.  I currently have the 64 bit YSFW drivers installed.  My main problem is that I can not change the IEEE1394 Driver from mLan to =FW.  Should I be using the 32bit version of the FW drivers or do I have an issue with the 4pin firewire connection on my laptop?

Any and all assistance with this problem will be greatly appreciated.

The current YSFW Driver for Windows7 64-bit is version 1.6.0

My main problem is that I can not change the IEEE1394 Driver from mLan to =FW.

You cannot change it, does this mean that the option does not even show up. Or when you change it, it changes back?

If the option is not there at all, it is because you have an old operating systme in your Motif XS. Current operating system is 1.56.xx

You can check your operting system (firmware) version as follows
Press [UTILITY] to enter UTILITY mode
While in UTILITY mode press the following three buttons together

[UTILITY] + [UP CURSOR] + [F1]

The Firmware version will be shown.

If you have an old firmware go to the official download page and get the latest UPDATER.

Before you update. Make a backup of all your data by STORING your current work… and then SAVE the data to a USB drive
Press [FILE]
Set TYPE = ALL
Press [SF1] SAVE
Give the file a name
Press [ENTER]
This will allow you to get all of your data and all of your settings back later after the update. Assume the UPDATE will clear your machine.

The UPDATER will bring you completely up to date and allow you to select the IEEE1394 = FW option.

-------------------------------------------------------

New “IEEE1394 Driver” parameter

Press [UTILITY] > [F1] GENERAL > [SF4] AUTO LOAD
The Auto Load display, which is used to specify the default display and which file to automatically load when the instrument is turned on, now includes a parameter named “IEEE1394 Driver.”

Using this parameter, you can set the driver to be used when connecting your computer’s IEEE1394 connector to the instrument’s mLAN connector.

Settings: mLAN, FW

mLAN
Select “mLAN” when using the (old) AI Driver or the mLAN Tools/mLAN Driver. Specifically, this setting is used when only connecting a single MOTIF XS to your computer or when connecting with mLAN-compatible devices via mLAN.

FW
Select “FW” when using the Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver. Specifically, this setting is used when also connecting devices such as the Steinberg MR816 CSX or MR816 X to your computer.

After setting this to FW, you must press [STORE] to make it a part of your Motif XS’s system preferences. And then you must REBOOT…

Thank you Bad Mister for your fast reply.  I did exactly as you instructed.  I only had to update to Motif firmware to 1.56. (I had 1.55) Everything else was up to date.  I am still having the same problem though.  I go to Utility - Autoload and IEEE Driver.  (It currently shows mLan) I try to change it to FW but it won’t let me.  The only option it allows me is mLan.  I tried connecting via USB and that connects works and sinc’s okay.  Any other help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Could the problem be because my laptop has a 4pin FW I/O ?  I am using a 4pin fW I/O cable to a normal pin I/O cable to the XS8

Thanking you in advance for your induclgence.

A firewire cable that is 4-pin on one end and 6-pin on the other is fine.

Please call our Custmer Support team, an Application Specialist will take your information and call you back. They can be reached at 714.522.9000 Monday thru Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm Pacific Daylight Time.

bullseye101, did you ever get a solution to your problem?  I’ve just updated from 1.55 to 1.56 and I’m now experiencing the same problem; I can’t change my IEEE 1394 setting to FW, it appears to be stuck on mLan.

Make sure that you have updated your IEEE1394 FIRMWARE with the appropriate UPDATER for your computer type.

This UPDATER will bring your Firewire port on the XS up-to-date. Current for the Motif XS with mLAN16E2 is 1.07

youngran,

I did what Bad Mister just instructed you to do and now I can change from mLAN to FW.  I am still having other issues but have not had the time to work on them.  So Bad Mister...be ready for more questions.  (lol) You’re the best BM.  Thanks for all the help you provide here.

BM, once again, you nailed it!

My 1394 firmware was v1.02!  Did the update to 1.07 and problem solved.

How I didn’t have this updated ages ago just blows me away; go figure…

Anyway, thx again for your quick & timely response!

Cheers,
Randy
