May be everybody here is right to some extend,
but, seriously guys, I rather see a beginner put $4000 in an
instrument for a lifetime than in a new car ...
(that may be recalled to the dealer every now and then; LOL).

When we bought our first (an S90) we looked at each other and
said “what did we do?”.
After all it was one of the best investments we ever did.

to be honest right now I am thinking on a Motif XS 7 for portability and compatibility with my budget :)

I don’t think the flash thing will be much needed in my case

Thanks for the advice

Besides if yamaha ere to stick with newest technology it would chose modern RAM memory not archaic…

You still don’t get it do you?  RAM is volatile, Flash is not.  This is the whole point of the XF’s Flash memory.

XS7 has not balanced hammer effect keyboard. If you really want to play the piano, I should buy xs8 or es8.

OK, let’s all buy the things that we want as long as we can afford
it; enjoy the best hobby on earth and stop being difficult.

XS7 has not balanced hammer effect keyboard. If you really want to play the piano, I should buy xs8 or es8.

i do not think he want to be a piano play but what we call a keyboard player/composer today. A real piano don’t have Yamaha balanced hammer effect also a organ has not balanced hammer keys and a bass guitar has no keys at all.

Yamaha don’t try to make there workstations keys feel just like a real piano or they would not have made them with BH effect.

A beginner need not buy a $3000+ workstation like a XS8 or XF8 look at a MM6/8 or MO6/8 first.

It’s best to lean how to play 10 song well before you begin on the SEQ recorder and stay away from them APPS’s for now. Just lean the basics first.

I think S90XS has no sequencer.

So here’s another basic question since I too am very new to the Motif Line.

Are there any differences in the sound banks, VST’s, Arpeggiators, Vocoders, etc., between the XF6, XF7, and XF8?  My budget will most likely allow me to just get the XF6, but if there are any differences in the “aformentioned”, I’d might just have to save up more for the XF7. Mind you, I’ve already made my decision on getting an XF (hehe).

There isn’t any difference in the XF6/7/8 as far as that goes.

Size wise I have an XS7 and I find it a little big for gigging...size wise

My recommendation, and the path I ended up taking when I shopped around for a new setup some time ago, is to get an XS6 (XF6 if you’re feeling froggy) and an 88-key midi controller that has weighted and graded keys that you like.

Then you hook up the 88-key controller to your Motif, plug your Motif into your monitors (or board, whatever) for sound and you’ve got piano style keys for playing piano / ep sounds (or anything you want weighted keys for) and you’ve got AWESOME waterfall keys on the XS/XF6 for playing organ / synth sounds (or whatever).

Once Yamaha releases an update that allows for tap-tempo on the XS this will be a perfect setup for all the needs I’ve had so far, both studio and stage.

Something to note if you do decide to go this route, you’ll spend around $140 on a good stand that stacks the keyboards.

Happy hunting!

I started off with the XS6 because i didn’t know how to play piano, and at the time thought that it wouldn’t matter, I ended up buying an additional weighted 88 keyboard and linked it to the motif. If I had to do it it all over again I would’ve bought the XS8. As of right now doing my slight research, if you are wanting a motif and are brand new to the motif family, I think the XS would fit you find since there (as of right now) seems to be no difference and you can get an XS for a cheaper price. I only seen getting the XF if you have to all the so called extra features and of course have a black motif.  Either way you go you are going to a good sounding keyboard !!
