Hey guys, my name is Nick and I’m fourteen years old. I own a Ymaha P85 and an old Korg Triton LE and I’ve been thinking about replacing both of them with a motif XS. Do you think it’s too late to buy it, with new workstations on the horizon?

I’m sure that there are dealers that still have them, but I would wait for the new one (personally).  It is just a couple of days away and will probably be like an XS with many added features (it looks like it will have all of the XS features plus flash memory, double the sample rom and more) If you really want the XS though check places like Sweetwater, Guitar Center and such and I am sure that you will find one.  After the XF is released you will still be able to find used XS keyboards in great condition as well and probably be able to find leftover stock of the XS at a reduced rate as well.

God bless!

I’d wait for the new one for two reasons:

1.) If it’s in your budget just get the new one, the old one is going to take a hit in resale value as soon as the general public knows the XS isn’t the newest anymore.

2.) If you decide you still want an XS, the price should come down once the XF is released.

You can edit the preset organ voices to your taste.
And if that’s not enough, look at some of the organ specific voice libraries

Use your computer to copy the (unzipped) files from the product download to a USB flash drive. Connect the flash drive to the Motif, and load from there. There may be specific loading instructions for any given product, so be sure to check out any user guides that are provided.

You could also load via ethernet if you prefer.

Depends on what you’re after. The Distorted Rock organs on the Motif are OK. The Other organs are quite good. Personally I think it has a lot to do with the Distortion effects in DSP. Personally I don’t think they’re that great!

I have to disagree… the distortions are actually really good...I thought that they were pretty lame at first too… but I played with them a lot one night and also plugged in my guitar and ran it through to see how horrible they sounded.. and i was really surprised to hear that they were great.  I have to admit… it would be nice if all of the effects had the stompbox style layout instead of the crazy matrix of settings but that is really just fluff.. you gotta tweak the distortions for all the organ patches… there is often way too much or even the wrong type of distortion on the patches… a little tweaking will go a long ways… I actually assign the gain to an assignable knob so I can get just the right amount while playing…

Crap....I’m coming from a korg background so if tweaking is necessary it’s going to take some time to learn Yamaha’s interface.

In my synth collection I have an XS, Triton Rack and M3, amongst other things.

The preset XS organs are not noticeably better or worse ‘out of the box’ than those in the M3 or Triton. Digital distortion is by its very nature not particularly authentic for organ sounds, but combining it with the master FX on the XS gives the XS the edge over the others, in my opinion.

There is a patch for the Yamaha SY85 which uses a digital distortion on there and gives exquisite results, but I’ve not been able to reproduce this on any of the Motifs unfortunately.

Df.

Do you think the XS is the better unit out of the three?

None of Korg’s or Yamaha’s workstations are programmed from the factory to be competitive with dedicated organ keyboards. However, they can be, and that’s the idea behind my Organimation sound sets for the Motif ES, Motif XS, and M3. All three can sound significantly more authentic than the presets convey. There’s currently not a Triton version of Organimation, but I’m considering it.
