dear motivators

How do I get a multi made on the XS rack including all the volume and ADSR settings etc onto a Motif XS 8?

Basically how do I save the multi on the Xs rack onto the computer through USB. I’ve installed the Yamaha usb drivers on my Mac OSX computer and connected the XS rack with a usb cable to the computer. But the XS doesn’t show up as a drive on the desktop or anything

Help greatly appreciated!

How do I get a multi made on the XS rack including all the volume and ADSR settings etc onto a Motif XS 8?

There are actually several ways to get a MULTI made on the Motif-Rack XS into a keyboard Motif XS.

1) MIDI transfer
_ Connect the MIDI OUT of the Motif-Rack XS to the MIDI IN of the Motif XS8
_ Make sure both units are set to MIDI IN/OUT = MIDI
_ Call up the Multi you want to transfer on the Motif-Rack XS and the SONG or PATTERN MIXING setup you want it transferred to in the Motif XS8
_ Press the following two buttons simultaneously [MULTI] + [STORE]
The screen will read “Now transmitting MIDI bulk dump!”
The data will arrive in the Motif XS8
On the Motif XS: Press [STORE] to write the information to memory.

2) Studio Manager and the Motif-Rack XS and Motif XS Editors
If you use Studio Manager and the Motif-Rack XS Editor simply save your MULTI in a .X1E (Motif-Rack XS Editor) File. This file type can be ‘opened’ by the Motif XS Editor. Once you have saved the Rack XS Editor file, you can open it in the XS Editor:
Go to FILE > OPEN > Set FILE TYPE = Motif-Rack XS Editor (*.X1E)
Open the file.

3) MIDI Transfer using a bulk utility
If the two instruments cannot be in the same place at the same time you can use a MIDI UTILITY program as a go between. Something like MIDI-OX which can record bulk dump information and save it as a .SYX file will allow you to move this bulk data to a convenient device you can transport.

Basically how do I save the multi on the Xs rack onto the computer through USB. I’ve installed the Yamaha usb drivers on my Mac OSX computer and connected the XS rack with a usb cable to the computer. But the XS doesn’t show up as a drive on the desktop or anything

You save the MULTI of the XS Rack onto your computer through USB by using the STUDIO MANAGER and the Motif-Rack XS Editor. They are available for download from:  the official Motif-Rack XS Download page

You want to get:
_ Studio Manager version 2.3.2 for Mac OS X
_ Motif-Rack XS Editor version 1.3.0 for Mac OS X
_ Motif XS Editor version 1.3.0 for Mac OS X

The Motif XS and the Motif-Rack XS do not show up on your desktop because they are not drives, they are synthesizers which are external devices - your Mac cannot directly read or write to them via USB (like a drive). You will need to address them via USB through the software I have listed above.

If you get stuck, post back here.

Thank you so much!

I’m looking at the last thing you explained as this is the part I’m looking to use.

“"You save the MULTI of the XS Rack onto your computer through USB by using the STUDIO MANAGER and the Motif-Rack XS Editor. They are available for download from:  the official Motif-Rack XS Download page"”

I’m now downloading from the link you gave me:
MOTIF-RACK XS Editor VST V1.4.0 for Mac OS X(10.4 - 10.6)

But i cannot find the last 2:
_ Motif-Rack XS Editor version 1.3.0 for Mac OS X
_ Motif XS Editor version 1.3.0 for Mac OS X

Where can i find these?

So I installed:
motif_xs_editor_vst_140_mac
motif-rack_xs_editor_vst_140_mac
sm232mx
um121mx

All installed succesfully.

but…

I have NO CLUE how this works!! The editors I can’t seem to find/open and the Yamaha Studio Manager opens but i’m totally lost. There’s no devices found. i only have the XS rack connected to the computer through usb. all i want to do i send my multi through internet to my musical partner who owns an XS 8. why does this have to be so difficult. on the XS you can just save your song on a usb stick easy

Please help me once again

Sorry but I was very specific about the version - the VST Version of the Editor (which you downloaded) does not work with Studio Manager.

Please if you are going to use STUDIO MANAGER, then download the version I stated in the post:

Motif-Rack XS Editor 1.3.0
Motif XS Editor 1.3.0

The VST Editor (v1.4.0), just so you know, does not work with with Studio Manager but works as a VSTi plugin in any DAW capable of running VST3 applications (Steinberg Cubase, Steinberg Nuendo, Presonus Studio One, and someone recently reported Ableton Live). If you are not running a VST3 compatible DAW, then you will want to run it using STUDIO MANAGER which means you need the version 1.3.0 of the EDITOR.

If you download the right version Studio Manager will “see” it, trust me. It is not that difficult (once you have the correct version!!!).

Thank’s a million!

I got it up and running now I can open the XS Rack editor now and when i double click on the xs rack i get to the main screen.

Problem is: The status stays on offline. When i click on the offline button it says Ports have not been properly set.

I’m only connecting through a usb cable.

I have set Detail to on:
MIDI IN MIDI OUT
port 1:  empty Not assigned Device No. 1
port 4 Not assigned Not assigned

when i click on Not assigned there’s nothing else there to choose from.

How do i make the connection work?

Saying you have the latest (as you have learned with Editor version) does not always guarantee you have what you need!

If you have the proper one for your computer it should be okay. You may additionally want to download the “Extension” for both the Motif XS and Motif-Rack XS as this allows the ports to be identified by name.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Connect via USB
Connect the Motif XS to your computer via USB.

Set the Motif XS to MIDI IN/OUT = USB
• Press [UTILITY]
• Press [F5] CONTROL
• Press [SF2] MIDI
• Set MIDI IN/OUT = USB
• Press [STORE] to write this to your Flash ROM

Launch the STUDIO MANAGER
• Go to FILE > SETUP on the Studio Manager toolbar.
You want to “ADD” the “MOTIF XS” editor to your Workspace. There will be a list of Editors on the left side of the dialog box; {ADD} in the middle and your workspace on the right side of the dialog box.

• Select the MIDI SETTING Tab and check “Yamaha Motif XS-1” and “Yamaha Motif XS-4” on the INPUT PORTS side
And do the same on the OUTPUT PORTS side

Do not check Ports 2 or 3 on either side. Just 1 and 4. This makes the PORTS available for SETUP in the EDITOR!!!

• Click APPLY
• Click OK

Double click the Motif XS icon to launch the Motif XS Editor

Setup the Motif XS Editor
• Click on FILE > SETUP on the Motif XS Editor toolbar
Here you want to setup the communication between the Motif XS and the Editor.
• Select USB as the DATA PORT
• Set the DETAIL = ON
Make settings for Port 1 and Port 4. The USB connection requires a two-way, two port communication

ps. everytime you want to load in 1 of your old .X1E files it has to sync again which takes a minute or so.

Is this necessary everytime to load in a new multi? Doesn’t sound too good to me or am i missing something?

A close inspection of the AUTO SYNC SETTINGS screen you will see that you have three main things you can SYNC.
1) Global - these are the settings you make in UTILITY Mode
2) Current - if you only want to sync the current Multi - well this would be the option you want to check
3) Voice - this synchronizes the entire USER Voice (384) and USER Drum Voice (32 kits) library (and is what is taking the time) if you already have the VOICES sync’d simply uncheck this option and get finished much (much, much) faster

That is the ‘something’ you are missing. :)

also one big problem. i got the MIDI IN/OUT setting on usb like you said and then it syncs perfectly with the editor/studio manager

BUT

I got the motif connected through a midi cable to a akai mpc. when I got a usb cable connected or the MIDI IN/OUT setting on usb i’m not getting any signal to the mpc.

how can i keep the sync with the editor/studio manager but at the same time control it through a midi cable and sequence the motif sounds on the MPC?

Open the Motif-Rack XS Editor - make all the setup connection in Studio Manager and the Motif-Rack XS Editor
Call up the MULTI that you want to transfer on the Motif-Rack XS front panel
Go to BULK on the main menu bar of the Motif-Rack XS Editor
Select DATA SYNC
Select the RECEIVE direction
Select “Current”
Click OK

The Editor will send a REQUEST to the Motif-Rack XS, which will read “Now transmitting bulk data...” the Editor will receive the MULTI.
Go to FILE > SAVE > give the file a Name and save it to your computer. This will save as a *.X1E type file (Motif Rack XS Editor file) which you can open with the Motif XS Editor by setting the FILE TYPE = .X1E

how can i keep the sync with the editor/studio manager but at the same time control it through a midi cable and sequence the motif sounds on the MPC?

I don’t fully understand your setup… How do you generate MIDI Note data… is there something else you have not told us about? lol

That is: Do you have a keyboard in this setup somewhere? or is it just MPC and Motif-Rack XS?

In general, the Motif-Rack XS when setup to USB, can act as a MIDI interface for an external device connected to it 5-pin MIDI jacks. What you need to do is activate the “MIDI THRU” function of the STUDIO MANAGER > SETUP > MIDI SETTINGS.

In Studio Manager’s SETUP > on the MIDI SETTINGS tab, where you activated the MIDI INPUT and OUTPUT PORTS, Ports 1 and 4
("Yamaha Motif-R XS-1” and “Yamaha Motif-R XS-4") you will also want to activate PORT 3 “Yamaha Motif-R XS-3” for both INPUT and OUTPUT.

This will be used for the so-called MIDI THRU port function… Literally, data coming in the MIDI IN jack will pass ‘through’ the Motif-Rack XS - and go to the computer. And MIDI send back from the computer on PORT 3 will pass ‘through’ the Motif-Rack XS on its way to the MIDI OUT jack on the back panel.

When you check MIDI THRU, you can then set “Yamaha Motif-R XS-3” on the INPUT (left side) this means whatever you plug into the 5-pin MIDI jack of the Motif-Rack will be from your controller and whatever you place on the OUTPUT (right side) will be the destination for that controller.

So say you place Yamaha Motif-R XS-3 on the left side of “MIDI Thru"… and you place “Yamaha Motif-Rack XS-1” on the right side. The device plugged in to the MIDI IN jack will trigger the Motif Rack XS itself (because PORT 1 is the Rack XS).

If you place Yamaha Motif-Rack XS-3 on the right side the controller plugged in will trigger the device connected to the 5-pin MIDI OUT jack. (because PORT 3 is the MIDI jack on the back of the Rack XS).

We really don’t know the MPC or how you are routing your keyboard to it or if you even have a keyboard in your setup… but set the Motif-Rack XS to MIDI IN/OUT = USB, and you can use the MIDI THRU function to route signal where you need it to go.

Hope that helps. You might be able to route your keyboard into the MPC (if it has some kind of ‘thru’ feature) then on to the Rack XS’s MIDI IN… but again we don’t have an MPC nor do we know how it deals with incoming and outgoing MIDI signals. If you help us understand how it works, we may be able to suggest a solution.

If you figure it out post back.
