Never format an SMC card.

Try to read it on one or two PC’s and see what you get.

Did you format it on a PC or in the Motif?

Yep, formatting on pc is now even more inadvisable since we are now several evolutions beyond the windows OS when the Classic was released. I think I still had a Windows -’98 Machine. I used to run into the same problem. I’ll try and think what resolution I found…

Rule: no USB stick or memory card (including SMC) should ever be
formatted because they come factory formatted in the best format
and unless the device breaks down the format won’t ever be damaged.
Exceptions:
1) if you want to delete all files and directories at once without seeing what you are actually deleting,
2) if you wish to change format to another type.
The latter is bad for devices on synthesizers,
as the only ‘other’ format would be NTFS, which is not supported.

Over the years we have seen many SMC cards failing.
Almost none of them could be cured.
I advice to switch to the cheaper and more reliable solution
of an SMC-XD adapter and 128Mb XD cards.

Before you purchase another SMC card, I have one left over from the sale of my Classic. Anyway, it has some song files on it, (I believe), in Motif Classic file format. If you when be willing to save these as SMF files and email them to me, I would be willing to mail you the card for free…

If interested, pm me…

i like the idea of the adapter SMC-XD.. could i use an xd card with more memory? like a 1GB rather than just 128MB?

It will ‘see’ only 128Mb, so a 1Gb XD should be partitioned into
128Mb + the rest.

And .....................
YES this time that 128Mb needs a formatting of FAT16 (on the PC).

1Gb? You got a Classic.

ill stick with the 128Mb.. all that other stuff sounds too complicated.. so I would have to format the xd card? or i would only have to format it if i decided to partition it?.. thanks!
