1.3.3 is going to OWN!
haha

I really like how Yamaha has chosen to use two “version decimals.” Are we actually ever going to see that ‘0’ in the middle turn into a ‘1’ before the next rack is out?  That would be 7 updates from now!!!

Now it’s 1.0.4, I just wish they would create an app that would do the upgrade.  I’ve tried 4 different midi applications and none have worked.  What’s with the midi file for updating firmware anyway.

You don’t mention which MIDI applications you are running - but the most common error is that you forget that the file you are playing is a specific type of MIDI data (called System Exclusive data - this makes sense since it is intended specifically and exclusively for the Motif-Rack XS)… and most DAW MIDI applications, if they can deal with this much System Exclusive message data, default to FILTERING those messages.

If you don’t know which applications you are using or you don’t know how to UN-Filter System Exclusive you can use a completely ‘dumb’ playback device (which does not care what type of data you are sending).

For example, on a PC you can use Windows Media Player which is darn near foolproof (you don’t mention your computer type, nor is it listed in your profile) but if you need help with a specific playback program - post the details. We’d be happy to help… if we know the program.

For example:
Connect the Motif-Rack XS to the computer via USB (or Firewire)
Set the MIDI IN/OUT parameter in the Rack XS appropriately for the USB (or FW) connection you selected. (We assume you have the appropriate Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver or Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver for your computer type, if not download and install it and get it working, first).

In Windows you simply go the CONTROL PANEL > “SOUND and AUDIO DEVICES” > AUDIO > make the “MIDI PLAYBACK DEVICE” the port feeding the Motif-Rack XS

Make sure you computer is not set to go to sleep or hibernate (the update does take some time).

Open the .MID provided for the update
Follow the instructions for preparing the Motif-Rack XS for receiving the data:
Turn on the MOTIF-RACK XS while simultaneously holding down [MULTI]+[VOICE]+cursor [up] buttons.
When the “[Firmware Update] Waiting for starting sequencer...” message appears, release the button.

Press play on Windows Media Player - go make and eat lunch…
:)

hi bad mister, the instalation guide that you get with the os, is not correct becouse when you open it as a midi file it loads up a instrumant file not midi so you cant assighn the output port BUT by doing what you said here “In Windows you simply go the CONTROL PANEL > “SOUND and AUDIO DEVICES” > AUDIO > make the “MIDI PLAYBACK DEVICE” the port feeding the Motif-Rack XS
Make sure you computer is not set to go to sleep or hibernate (the update does take some time).

Open the .MID provided for the update

Press play on Windows Media Player”<<<<<<<<<<<<<

hi bad mister, the instalation guide that you get with the os, is not correct becouse when you open it as a midi file it loads up a instrumant file not midi so you cant assighn the output port

Glad you got it working - but the reason you could not in Cubase was because you have your Preferences set incorrectly.

In Cubase you have PREFERENCES for how it opens a .MID file. It only did what your setup told it to do. If you wanted it to work in Cubase you would have to change your PREFERENCES so that when you IMPORT a MIDI FILE it opens it with a MIDI track (not as you have it set which opens it on an INSTRUMENT Track).

Cubase is much more complicated (because it is far more flexible) than something like Windows Media Player - I always recommend it because most people never read the manual for something like Cubase. :)
