You must know David Paich. One of the greatest Keyboard players in my mind. I had an idea for a sound library and I’d like to share this with all who idolize this guy. Lets not forget Steve Porcaro either. Some of you know about the DX7 sound cartridge with the sounds that they used. I’d like to see them release a more updated soundset for the Motif XS which cover all the sounds they used in the last 35 years. I’ve started creating sounds and performances that are very Toto and it inspired me to share this idea with all of you especially where you DP are a programmer. Any thoughts?

I still walk around the house playing the intro drums of Rosanna on my chest all day long, hitting those ghost notes on my chest and stomach.  Drives my wife crazy.

I also check in on youtube every so often to see Bobby Kimball singing live.

The talent level in that band was off the charts.

Wow! Absolutely!

David Paich is actually my top role model in Toto and I also got the Motif XS8 and I want his sounds so much for my Toto repetitions. One of the sounds is the main Africa sound and also the Rosanna brass.

I’m really interested if you got those settings!

Paich and Porcaro are surely two of my reasons for being a keyboard player as well.
The main Africa sound is on one of the voice libraries by the way. Is it Vintage Keys?
That sound is used on many of the records of Toto and is a typically Porcaro-brassy pad.

Well let’s see:

Here is what I can reference for sounds from my setup to start some sort of sound set and all input is welcome from you guys, the Toto fans:

> DX7 Full Tines and Synth Brass together on a DX7II
> DX7 Kalimba or Africa
> Motif XS CP70 Layered with Full Tines and a good Synth Brass in Performance Mode (Live in Paris 1990)

>Motif XS CP70 with a touch of SPX Chorus or 2 Modulation Chorus (Hold the Line)

>Motif XS Power Grand Layered with Lush and a good Synth Brass in Performance Mode plus controlling a VK8 or VK8M externally (Live in Amsterdam)

I requested the Power Grand and Jazz Grand samples be posted some time ago on the XSpand Your World content just to get the piano sound from the Motif 8 which Paich used on the Amsterdam 25 Tour and the previous setup which the main piano sound came from the Yamaha P50M. That piano sample has been around for years and sounds great in the mix or in a solo. There is great samples out there… I’ve got the Steinway D from K-Sounds but I save that for Country. I just can’t get past the old sounds. They are effective. People are familiar with them. They are still industry standard.

By the way, I’m working on some SY99 patches like Choir, Strings and the Brass patch called ‘Power’ which I believe he used when he was playing on the SY boards.

Build off of that and see what you come up with. I will be releasing some of my stuff for download soon but I don’t have everything completed yet. I’m only working on live setups and referencing from that so it won’t actually be the sounds from the actual albums. I’ve used these setups in just about every genre of music and had excellent results and had a lot of questions about the sounds I use.

Thank you!

And I am thinking of bying new sounds, especially piano sounds. David Paich gets this CLICK and tightness on the Piano in Live In Amsterdam and it’s just sick.

I am currently using Piano Back on the XS8 and I am in live with it. If you know any way to modify it to get the Paich Live sounds, please tell me!

Take care, guy!

Great synth sounds, I forget them sometimes.  They are more sophisticated sounding than some of the new wave you heard around that time.

Always liked their song Rosanna a lot.  You don’t hear them played much these days.

Hello guys, any update on this idea on programing Toto sounds on the XS?
I’m definitely very interested in this. I’m trying to make some myself, when i make some good progress i’ll post the results.
